Kershaw, SC - Checkered Motorsports had another dominant weekend as the team traveled to Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, South Carolina for the Zoom Zoom Nationals in Round 2 of the WKA Manufacturer’s Cup. The Ohio-based team picked up two victories, two podiums, and five top-10 finishes.
The highlight of the weekend was the impressive performance of Robert Bujdoso in the TaG class, who drove to dominating victories in both TaG 1 and TaG 2. While Bujdoso had much to celebrate in TaG, he faced disappointment in the Parilla Leopard class as mechanical issues plagued the No. 32 PCR in qualifying and the pre-final. He started the final from the last position and quickly worked his way forward – only to have the engine water temperature shoot dangerously high. Bujdoso made the decision to pull off track rather than risk a damaged motor, but unfortunately it would turn out that the water temperature sensor had simply malfunctioned.
Roby’s younger brother, Andrew Bujdoso picked up his first national podium by placing second in Komet Jr. Heavy. Andrew had high hopes of a podium finish and all in attendance could see the determination of the young driver as he drove one of his best races to date. After dropping back to fifth place, Andrew made a charge forward to finish second. The entire Checkered Motorsports crew was elated about Andrew’s great accomplishment. Andrew had hoped to carry the momentum from Saturday’s podium finish into Sunday’s Komet Jr. Lite event. He started 20th out of the 33-kart field and displayed another solid performance behind the wheel of the No. 78 PCR – cleanly swapping positions every lap to finish 15th.
Leonardo Stoia brought Checkered Motorsports another podium finish when he earned his best national result with a third place in Yamaha Sportsman Lite. Teammates Nick Luedeke, JP Southern Jr., and Braden Eves joined Stoia in the Sportsman division and combined to give Checkered Motorsports a total of six top-10 finishes throughout the weekend.
The four junior drivers represented Checkered Motorsports well in the Cadet and Sportsman Lite classes. In addition to his third place finish in Yamaha Sportsman Lite, Stoia had a strong run in Cadet to finish eighth in Cadet 1 and ninth in Cadet 2.
Nick Luedeke gave a solid performance to finish 10th in both Cadet classes. He also drove to a 16th place result in Yamaha Sportsman Lite. Braden Eves earned a 14th place finish with his PCR in the Cadet 1 Final, but had a frustrating weekend with DNFs in Cadet 2 and Yamaha Sportsman Lite. JP Southern Jr. did not have the weekend he had anticipated with two DNFs in Cadet. However, the young driver would drive to a 29th place finish in the Yamaha Sportsman Heavy final.
Checkered Motorsports and PCR were well represented in the ever competitive TaG class as R. Bujdoso, Kyle Knecht, Kyle Smith and Connor Hayes would give solid performances throughout the weekend. Knecht qualified 10th in TaG 1 and ran consistently quick lap times to contest a top-10 result. He would finish 18th in TaG 2 in a field of over 40 entries. Smith also ran quick lap times in TaG 1 – consistent with those running in the top-10. He would drive to a 21st place finish in Sunday’s TaG 2 final. Hayes had a strong run to an impressive 11th place finish in TaG 1 and gave an exceptional performance in the Parilla Leopard class to run as high as eighth before a fuel line failure ended his day early.
TaG Masters pilot Tom Gerstner made great progress throughout the weekend and topped off the event with a seventh place finish in the TaG Masters final.
Checkered Motorsports will return to national competition April 29-31 for Round 3 of the WKA Manufacturer’s Cup at Michiana Raceway Park in South Bend, Indiana.
