I've spent the past four days out at Pala MX Raceway for the annual A Day In The Dirt Motocross Grand Prix. It's three days of fun, family ... just a really great event. Where else can you ride with both your daughter and Jeremy McGrath?

But instead of telling you what it's about, I thought I'd share with you what it's like to do a lap in one of the Team races. A Team race is where you have a partner (I raced with Louis Franco) and you switch off each lap. You have to 'hand off' a wrist band to your partner - and then he takes off to do the next lap.

HARGROVE JOINS JDC MOTORSPORTS FOR 2012 USF2000 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Canadian enters Mazda Road to Indy program as Skip Barber Summer Series runner-up

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Junior formula car leader JDC MotorSports is excited to announce the addition of Scott Hargrove to its Cooper Tires Presents the USF2000 National Championship powered by Mazda program for the upcoming 2012 season. The talented Canadian will be making his series debut with the Minnesota-based squad following a successful rookie car racing season.

With an eye towards again challenging for top honors in the competitive USF2000 National Championship, JDC MotorSports has signed its first driver for the 2012 campaign. Hargrove, having finished second in the Skip Barber Summer Series in his first season of car competition, will make his pro F2000 debut, joining multiple race winner JDC MotorSports. The Surrey, B.C., native recently impressed the renowned junior formula car outfit in private testing at Blackhawk Farms Raceway, demonstrating good speed, skill, and feedback in his initial outing in a Mazda-powered Van Diemen. With support from RaceEnergy, Analytic Systems, Skip Barber Racing School, and Italian Motors, Hargrove will enter his new partnership with JDC with an eye on the USF2000 Rookie of the Year.

"After testing with the team in late September, I am ecstatic to be a part of JDC MotorSports for 2012, it really is a dream come true!" stated Hargrove. "The team has an extensive history of success, and I know they will provide me with all the best equipment to help continue that success into 2012. It is a very exciting time to join USF2000 and start on the Mazda Road to Indy, as many of my competitors from 2011 in Skip Barber have chosen to peruse rides in USF2000. 2012 will be a year full of learning, and I'm ecstatic that John Church and the team will be there to aid me all along the way."

"We are very happy to have signed Scott for the 2012 season," commented JDC MotorSports principal John Church. "He had a great test with the team in late September and we look forward to a successful campaign in 2012."

The 16 year-old Hargrove enters the USF2000 National Championship following a brief but successful start to his motorsports career. Having made his karting debut in 2008 via local competition, the Canadian quickly made his mark, winning two IKF Region 6 Gold Cup karting championships as a rookie in the Senior class. Winning a scholarship presented by MAZDASPEED Motorsports, The FIA Motorsports Safety Development Fund and Skip Barber Racing School, Hargrove made the transition to car competition this past season. The teenager promptly showed good natural talent by winning four races en route to capturing the Rookie of the Year award and second in the Skip Barber Summer Series.

JDC Motorsports continues preparations for the 2012 season with the squad's USF2000 cars taking to the Indianapolis Motorsports Speedway road course on October 28-29, as part of the Chris Griffis Memorial Mazda Road to Indy Open Test. JDC will make further announcements regarding its 2012 driver line-up in the coming weeks, with the team currently evaluating additional racers, and interested parties urged to contact the squad.

In 2005, JDC MotorSports expanded its efforts, entering the Star Mazda Championship. DEGRAND AT FWT FINALE IN OCALA

J3 Competition/Kosmic driver places second and fourth in stacked Rotax Senior field

Ocala, FL - The Ocala Gran Prix facility in Ocala, Florida has been a favorable destination for American karting star Tristan DeGrand. This past weekend (March 25-27), the Florida Winter Tour Rotax Max Challenge held its series finale at the 1/2-mile circuit with DeGrand making his second start in the Rotax Senior category. Following last month’s top-10 performances and visiting a facility he has gained a lot of success at, DeGrand entered the event with strong confidence of recording the best results possible. Tristan accomplished that feat by standing on the podium following Saturday’s round of action and missing out Sunday by just one position.

With the large entry numbers for the event, the FWT program holds their qualifying sessions on Friday afternoon. Sunday’s round six session took place first during the afternoon with DeGrand posting a 36.664-lap to place eighth overall - just over one tenth off the pole position. Later that day, qualifying for Saturday’s round five events took place with DeGrand gaining a tenth of a second (36.569) to sit fifth overall - still just one tenth out of the fast time in a field of 38 drivers.

“I was excited to return to Ocala and repeat my results from 2009. We worked really hard in both West Palm and Ocala to find a good setup,” commented DeGrand, looking back on the weekend. “The track proved more difficult in Ocala. During the second qualifying session, we seemed to find a better setup and I managed to increase my pace in the second qualifying session from the first qualifying session on Friday.”

Following a warm-up session Saturday morning, DeGrand set up in grid spot five for the 18-lap Prefinal. Avoiding any opening lap incident, Tristan was comfortable in the lead group. The comfort did not last long as the group began shuffling around for position. At the checkered flag, DeGrand was able to hold on to his fifth position, where he started the race, to place him at the favorable inside of row three to start the Final. Another solid start put DeGrand in the third position after completing the first lap, trailing the top two drivers. The 24-lap run saw Tristan hold onto their draft but unable to make any advancement, crossing the line in third position. Following post-race inspection, the second place driver was found to be improper, thus moving DeGrand to the second spot on the podium in just his third Rotax Senior start.

Sunday’s action began poorly for DeGrand, right from the drop of the green flag. Through the opening lap, Tristan was involved in an incident that sent him back to the 22nd position the first time across the scoring stripe. As he showed in Palm Beach, DeGrand was capable of regaining his lost positions. After 18 laps, DeGrand was shown in the 13th spot. The good news was his inside starting position of the seventh row. Through the opening lap of the Final, DeGrand was able to avoid the early carnage and break into the top-10. DeGrand was on the tail-end of a seven kart pack that trailed the leader. The group shuffled positions throughout the closing laps with DeGrand able to capitalize and move up to the fourth spot with two laps to go. Unable to overtake for third place, DeGrand crossed the line in the fourth spot to complete a double top-five weekend performance.

“I am very proud of the team as they worked very hard to get these results,” continued DeGrand. “I’m happy to have improved on my performance from West Palm Beach and standing on the podium in just my second weekend in the Senior class is a true thrill. Thank you to team manager Justin Stefani and the rest of the crew at J3 Competition for all their hard work.”

The 15-year old will return to the state of Florida on April 8-10 for the first event of the Rotax Pan American Challenge, set for the Homestead Karting facility south of downtown Miami. Tristan would like to thank his sponsors - J3 Competition, Supertune USA, Alpinestars, Pro Am Golf, Inc. and Thinkglobale Inc. - for their support. Additional information on Tristan DeGrand can be found on his personal website - degrandracing.com .”

About Tristan DeGrand:
Eureka, Missouri’s Tristan DeGrand has grown to be one of the rising stars in North American karting. Getting his start in the sport at age 7, DeGrand was among the best at a young age. After establishing his name in the Cadet ranks, he matured in the last three seasons in the Junior category. DeGrand was crowned the 2009 KF3 North American champion and competed in Europe in 2010. The highlight of last season came at in WSK World Series when DeGrand stood on the KF3 podium at the United States round to become the first American to stand on the series podium. For 2011, DeGrand is focused on competing in the Rotax division throughout the USA, including the Florida Winter Tour and Rotax Pan American Challenge in addition to the WSK Nations Cup in Canada.

$268,000 IN SPONSORSHIPS AVAILABLE TO YOUNG DRIVERS IN TALENT SEARCH

SACRAMENTO, CA – Star Racing Supply, a top race parts retailer based in California, announces a powerful sponsorship program for young race drivers. The sponsorship program offers up to 18 young drivers from $6,000 to $18,000 each in sponsorship for the 2012 racing season.

In alliance with the nationally recognized talent search conducted by Ron Sutton's Winner's Circle, 40 talented young drivers from across the United States and Canada will be selected to participate in “The Shoot-Out“ … an annual, extensive, three day driver try out event, in three types of USAC and NASCAR race cars.

The Shoot-Out is focused on finding top talented, young drivers to be developed towards Professional Stock Car careers with RSWC. Selected drivers joining the RSWC development program will be groomed, coached, trained and raced in USAC and NASCAR oval track series.

“This $268,000 in driver development racing sponsorships is just the next step in goals achieved for Star Racing Supply,” stated Susan Kinnicutt, Marketing Manager. “As a sister company to Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle, Star Racing Supply was started to serve racers and give back to the sport by helping young, upcoming, talented drivers. Now that we have achieved solid growth over the past few years, we’re in a financial position to give back.”

Ron Sutton's Winner's Circle is known in racing circles as the largest, and most comprehensive, Driver Career Development Program focused on oval track racing. RSWC has coordinated a Talent Combine in North Carolina with four top RSWC drivers testing with Cup Teams, an individual RSWC driver testing and signing with an official Cup Development Team in ARCA and guided a female RSWC driver successfully into the fully funded NASCAR Drive for Diversity program and now into NASCAR’s K&N Pro Series.

Ron Sutton said, “The economy is tough, but Star Racing has done well regardless, so these sponsorships are another way to help young drivers. We’re looking for talented young drivers and committed families, regardless of their budget. If the driver has the talent, and the family is committed, we have the people and tools to develop them, the teams to win races and the marketing expertise to help them raise the rest of the sponsorship.”

RSWC has developed many young racers to successfully make the transition from Karting, and other forms of youth racing, to winning races in full size cars in USAC and NASCAR Oval Track series, including Jessica Brunelli, Joey Licata Jr, Beau DeBard, Bobby Grewohl, Trevor Hunt, Brendan Langlois, Jace Meier, Ian Miille, Benny Moon, Jimmy Moon, Brennan Newberry, Jeff Oleen, Bobby Runyan, Nik Romano, Eli Schrock and others.

The program consists of 12 veteran driver coaches, 26 classroom training topics, 30 On-Track-Training programs, well known trainers and six racing organizations fielding 30 race teams, all dedicated to develop talented drivers to professional Stock Car racing. The teams are a balance of Open Wheel, Stock Car and Road Racing to develop highly versatile and accomplished winning drivers.

Families of young, winning drivers, ages 11 to 20, are encouraged to get detailed information from the web-site and submit their resume before the October 30th, 2011 deadline. The web-site is www.Winners-Circle-Racing.com

RJ Says: Give me a break in between supercross and motocross

Is the combined supercross / motocross season of today's era too long?

As a former supercross and motocross racer, I don't think the season is too long. Racers want to race.

But I would like to see a couple of changes that I think will make it better for the riders, teams, and most importantly, the fans.

First, I'd like to see a much longer break in between the end of the Supercross season, and the start of the MX season.

I think it would be great if the riders could have at least a couple off weekends off after the supercross season ends. One of the reasons is they could do more 'outdoor' testing at that time, instead of during supercross season.

JDC MOTORSPORTS ADDS TOP-10S IN ST. PETERSBURG

Ellery and Piedrahita overcome Round Three incident to score valuable points in Round Four

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – JDC MotorSports added to its 2011 Cooper Tires presents the USF2000 National Championship powered by Mazda points tally this past weekend (March 26-27), scoring two top-10 results on the streets of St. Petersburg, FL. Both Australian Luke Ellery and Colombian Juan Piedrahita overcame a race one incident to finish eight and ninth in Round Four.

One week after visiting victory lane in the season-opening doubleheader at Sebring International Raceway, the JDC squad was back on-course for Rounds Three and Four on the streets of St. Petersburg, FL. While neither Ellery nor Piedrahita had previously piloted an USF2000 car on the challenging street circuit when the action got underway on Friday, both were immediately up to speed in the two practice sessions. Ellery, showing superb skill in his No. 85 Melbourne IT/Luke-Ellery.com/Red Line Oil JDC MotorSports entry, adapted to the ever-changing grip levels to end day one at the top of the charts. Piedrahita, having turned the second quickest time in the opening morning run, ended the day P4 overall.

Given their performances leading up to qualifying, it came as no real surprise that the JDC MotorSports duo were among those to watch in the fight for the Round Three pole position. Piedrahita’s No. 19 Petrosur/GFK Motors/Montopharma/ Colombia es pasion/Red Line Oil/JDC MotorSports entry led the way early on, and it appeared the Colombian was headed towards his first series pole position, when a last lap flyer by another competitor sent the talented rookie to P2 in the final order. Ellery likewise looked good early on in qualifying, but the Australian was unable to find the space he desired to run a flyer late in session, ultimately earning a row four starting position.

When the JDC racers returned to their cockpits one-day later, the stage was set for potentially another series win. It was however not to be, as almost immediately after the green flag waved for Round Three in Florida, both Piedrahita and Ellery’s race came to premature end, the result of a multi-car collision in turn one.

JDC drivers and crew, while severely disappointed in the result, immediately but the incident behind them, repairing the cars and refocusing on race two of the St. Petersburg Grand Prix doubleheader.

Despite starting at the rear of the field for Round Four – the result of the grid being set by fast race times from Round Three – the JDC rookies made their mark come race time. With both Ellery and Piedrahita turning lap times on par with the race leaders, the duo steadily advanced up the scoring charts lap after lap. Advancing up to the fight for fifth place in the closing stages of the 21-lap race, Ellery and Piedrahita in the end earned valuable championship points by finishing eighth and ninth respectively.

JDC MotorSports and its talented rookie duo now have a nearly two-month hiatus, before returning to action on May 28th via Round Five of the Cooper Tires presents the USF2000 National Championship powered by Mazda at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indiana. The prestigious ‘Night Before the 500’ event marks the first of two oval races on the series calendar.

BMW M Denied Dedicated Car, Diesel M Possible

BMW's M division was born out of the idea of a dedicated car - the M1 was a supercar built with a sole purpose: homologation. Back then the Germans weren't so obsessed with profitability. Today they are.

However, he went on saying that the idea has been on the table several times, but a solid business cas...

Report: Nebraska's Carhenge on sale for $300,000

Filed under:

carhenge

Nebraska's Carhenge, an art installation built in 1987 by Jim Reinders, is up for sale. A 38-car tribute to the druid monument in England, Reinders built the automotive megalith on a farm once owned by his father on the outskirts of Alliance, Nebraska.

Not to be confused with the Cadillac Ranch in Texas, the site is owned and operated by the non-profit group, Friends of Carhenge, and it attracts some 80,000 visitors a year. Trouble is, the site doesn't charge admission and Friends of Carhenge is in debt, having taken out loans to maintain the structure.

The organization hopes to find a buyer who can fund amenities like a campground and go kart track on the property, which would give visitors reason to pay admission. Check out the Friends of Carhenge website for additional information.

DC Moto TF Ride Day with Josh Hill

In the 2010 AMA Supercross Championship series, Josh Hill consistently found himself on the podium. He ended the season sixth overall in points, in which he finished second in 5 of the 17 Main Events. In July, Josh spent time preparing for the 'Speed and Style' event for X Games 16. His practice session went from 'landing a backflip on his first attempt' to 'under rotating the next time around.' This horrific crash sent Josh to the hospital with a list of injuries and a whole new respect for the sport of Freestyle Motocross. I caught up with Josh, at Pala Raceway for the DC Moto TF Ride day, where he talked about his rehabilitation, his plans for Supercross 2011, and more!

Josh: Yeah I am getting better, everything is starting to heal up and I am getting to where I can function normally again. So it is getting better, but I need to focus on getting my body stronger. That is my main thing right now.

R4TC: 2010 Ride for the Cure at Cahuilla Motocross Park

I haven't hit the track much in 2010, but knowing that the 4th Annual Motocross Ride for the Cure Event was coming, I dusted off the KTM, dropped it off at Malcolm Motorsports for some fine tuning, hit Milestone Motocross Track for a handful of warm ups and I was ready to enjoy the funnest event of the year hosted by motocross enthusiast herself, Laurie Carey, who is constantly raising the bar for fundraising, support, education and interaction for Breast Cancer Awareness!

The morning started off amazing, perfect day to moto! The sky's were bright blue and littered with dark fluffy rain clouds! Dropping rain in perfect track watering patterns, the day was in full swing and the pits were packed! Tons of Factory support lined up for the event, they even had a never ending Freestyle show in the works! Mike Metzger, the God Father of FMX was doing his thing and dozens of other talented riders busting out tricks for the fans.

I pretty much settled into a pack rat of MXGirls, WMA Pro Rider Elizabeth Bash, Race Techs Michelle Marshall, and Mission Motorsports Brooklyn McClendon. We had a blast mixing it up on the main and vet tracks, sporting our decorated "Ride for the Cure" Bra's and having a blast spinning laps, saving boobies!

In the end I was amazed at the growth this event has accumulated over the years, by far the most impressive outcome I've seen. I'm looking forward to next year's event, but more importantly, it's touching to see all the work Laurie Carey puts into the Support and Awareness of Breast Cancer.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Oct. 17, 2011) — Teams representing 11 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series cars turned upwards of 400 miles Monday during a test of Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Both NASCAR officials and drivers were optimistic about the continued development of the system. Plans call for the full implementation of EFI in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series beginning with the 2012 season.

“The entire NASCAR community has worked very closely together in developing the EFI system,” said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president for competition. “Today was a positive step in the right direction for us. We have associated ourselves with some world-class technology partners, including McLaren, Freescale and Holley, and going to EFI next season is only going to enhance the racing. The horsepower should be about the same, or perhaps slightly more, the cars will be more fuel efficient, and it’s the right thing to do from an environmental standpoint. Plus, it helps us become more relevant with the production cars that our fans drive every day.”

Four Hendrick Motorsports teams, two Stewart-Haas Racing teams, one team from Richard Childress Racing, one team from Michael Waltrip Racing, one Earnhardt-Ganassi team, a team from Joe Gibbs Racing and one team from Roush-Fenway Racing participated in Monday’s test session.

The No. 6 Roush Fenway Ford, driven by Trevor Bayne, turned in the day’s fastest lap with a speed of 189.793 mph. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. also tested the No. 6 Ford on Monday.

Richard Childress Racing’s Jeff Burton said that Monday’s test provided some “great feedback for the team engineers to build upon.”

“To have the engine tuners interface with the drivers and teams at today’s test is very important in the development of this system,” said Burton. “The test is an excellent tool for the engineers to improve upon their ability to tune the engines.”

Another NASCAR EFI test is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 20 at Talladega Superspeedway. The test is set to run from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. (CT).

OCALA GRAN PRIX SCORES 3 VICTORIES AT FWT

Askew and Neri run at the front of the field in Junior and Senior

Ocala, FL - With the final round of the Florida Winter Tour taking place at Ocala Gran Prix (OGP), team drivers would look to utilize track knowledge and experience to take home race wins. Leading the way was multi-time champion Nick Neri who scored the Rotax Senior race win on Sunday as well as Rotax Junior competitor Oliver Askew who claimed a pair of dominating wins.

"I am so proud of my team and drivers," exclaimed Jorge Arellano after the weekend was over. "We have had some great success over the past three months and to cap the tour off in the form that we did is something to build on in the future."

As the season began to wind down, several Ocala Gran Prix drivers hit their stride as they entered the final round of the Formula Kart Productions Florida Winter Tour. Competing in the ultra-competitive Rotax Junior class was a quartet of pilots, as Oliver Askew, Alex Keyes, Angus Hunt and Alex Hornborg would look to end off the series strong. While only one driver can win, that honor was given to Askew has he dominated the Rotax Junior class throughout the weekend.

After scoring the pole position for Sunday's racing action, Askew claimed the fourth place starting spot for Saturday but would look to move forward. After claiming the second position in the heat race, Askew went on to take the lead at the drop of the green flag for the main event and never looked back. Leading all twenty-four laps and scoring the fastest lap of the race, Askew scored his first career Florida Winter Tour win.

Starting from the pole position on Sunday, Askew scored a perfect day taking the heat race win, main event victory and fastest race lap to score maximum points on the day. With the pair of victories, the Floridian pilot claimed the second position in the overall championship.

Michigan resident Alex Keyes did not have the best of luck in Ocala as multiple incidents hindered any chances at a good result. Though the 14-year old driver managed to make both main events, contact throughout the finals would force him to retire early with a pair of 31st place results.

Fellow Floridian pilot Alex Hornborg would have a great showing in Saturday's racing action as he claimed the 17th place position while Georgia's Angus Hunt garnered a 19th place result on Sunday.

Ocala Gran prix's other race win came at the hands of two-time Florida Winter Tour Rotax Junior champion Nick Neri as he took the top honors in Sunday's Rotax Senior category. Jumping out to the lead early, Neri led all twenty-four laps as he stole the show. The race win made up for a disappointing result on Saturday as Neri was removed from the results after failing a controversial post-race technical inspection after claiming the second position on track.

Also competing in the Rotax Senior category was Miami-area driver Andrew Evans. Looking to utilize his experience of the OGP facility, Evans had his best result at this year's Florida Winter Tour on Saturday with a solid fourteenth place finish. Looking to improve on Sunday, Evans could only manage a 26th place finish.

Rotax Masters competitor Jason Bell entered the final weekend of action with a shot at the title. With a stout field of competitors, Bell garnered the third step on the podium on Saturday but ran into severe trouble on Sunday. After claiming the pole position for Sunday's festivities earlier in the weekend, Bell would make contact with a fellow competitor on the opening laps and be forced to retire from the heat race. Starting from the tail of the field, Bell worked his way forward to claim an impressive twelfth place result but came just short of the overall series crown.

Another driver scoring his best Florida Winter Tour results to date was the young Enzo Fittipaldi. After running inside the top twenty at the opening two rounds, Fittipaldi jumped into the top ten during the final rounds claiming a ninth place finish on Saturday and a fourteenth place result on Sunday in the Rotax Mini Max class.

The young Mathias Ramirez would be Ocala Gran Prix's sole entry in the Rotax Micro Max class as he would see battle against a host of seven to eleven year olds. Working with the OGP team personnel, Ramirez scored a solid eighth place result on Saturday but would falter slightly on Sunday to finish 16th.

Arellano added, "I am happy that this year's Florida Winter Tour is over. Though we had some great results and memories that will last a while, it is time for me to give my guys a break and regroup as we work towards a busy summer season."
