NASCAR-CUP: Stewart finishes 17th in All-Star race at Charlotte

All-Star Race Serves as Test Bed for Coke 600

Tony Stewart drove to a quiet 17th-place finish in the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race Saturday night at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway, ending a five-race streak of top-five finishes in the non-points event.

“We just weren’t very good. We struggled all night,” said Stewart, who has participated in each All-Star Race since joining the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series as a rookie in 1999 and won the 2009 All-Star Race. “We just missed it tonight. I mean, we’re not going to hit it every week, and if you’re going to miss it, you’d rather miss it on a night like tonight.”

Stewart’s run in the All-Star Race served as test session for the Coca-Cola 600 next Sunday at Charlotte – a point-paying race that also happens to be the longest event on the Sprint Cup schedule. When asked what he learned from the All-Star Race that could be applied to the Coca-Cola 600, Stewart was succinct, “Yeah, don’t bring back what we just ran tonight.”

The run was disappointment for Stewart, who carried the colors of Bass Pro Shops and the National Wild Turkey Federation on his No. 14 Chevrolet.

“I wanted to run really well for Johnny Morris (founder, Bass Pro Shops) and the guys at Bass Pro Shops and the National Wild Turkey Federation,” said Stewart after the race that was made up of four 20-lap segments followed by a 10-lap shootout. “It was an important night for me to run well for those guys, and I just let ‘em down.”

Teammate Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 39 Tornados Chevrolet for Stewart-Haas Racing, finished 10th to score his seventh top-10 finish in 11 career All-Star Races.

Jimmie Johnson won the All-Star Race. It was his third All-Star Race win and his ninth Sprint Cup victory at Charlotte.

Brad Keselowski finished .841 of a second behind Johnson in the runner-up spot, while Matt Kenseth, Kyle Busch and Dale Earnhardt Jr., rounded out the top-five. Kevin Harvick, Marcos Ambrose, Kurt Busch, Kasey Kahne and Newman comprised the remainder of the top-10.

Absent at the last GP in Portugal after Colin Edwards’s injury on this left collarbone, the team arrives on French soil with an old friend of the MotoGP.

Chris Vermeulen will be Texas Tornado’s substitute. While the American rider continues his post surgery recovery which will lead him to be back on the saddle of his Suter-BMW at Montmelo, the Australian comes back to the circuit in which he won his very first MotoGP race (2007) with his Lumber “7” on the furring.

In Moto2, after the first three rounds Alex De Angelis is in 10th position on the Moto2 World Standing with 14 points while Yuki Takahashi is still in search of points. The rider from San Marino shows a constant progress in this 2012 season and Le Mans could be the turning point for him. For Yuki France con be the ideal circuit for him to get his season started: the Japanese rider has always qualified in front row and even finished second on the podium in 2011.

Video: Canadian motorist hits moose, loses memory, yet makes it to work on time

Michelle Higgins' damaged Chrysler Sebring from moose impact

We will cop to having arrived at work suffering from memory loss, but never from hitting a moose. At least not that we can remember, anyway.

It's a story that verily defines "news of the weird," courtesy of CNN: A Canadian woman not only hit a moose with her car on her way to work, she drove some 25 miles after the collision, unaware that she had struck the beast. But this was no glancing blow. The force of the impact killed the moose, but not before it had shattered the windshield and peeled back the roof of the Michelle Higgins' Chrysler Sebring.

The woman was traveling on the Trans-Canada Highway in Newfoundland, according to the report, when the accident occurred. When Higgins arrived at work - on time, mind you - she had blood streaming down her face and was unaware of what had transpired. Her injuries included two broken bones in her neck, bruises, a hoof print on her forehead... and memory loss. Scroll down to watch the remarkable video report from CNN.

Report: A123 Systems posts $125 million net loss

A123 LogoThe Detroit News reports lithium-ion battery manufacturer A123 Systems is set to post a net loss of $125 million on revenue of $10.9 million for the first quarter of 2012. Official results will be released later this week. The loss includes $51.6 million tied to replacing battery packs produced at the company's Livonia, Michigan facility. Some of those packs could have been manufactured with defective cells. The figure also includes $15.2 million to increase inventory reserves.

As you may recall, A123 Systems provides battery packs for companies like Fisker. The extended-range EV manufacturer recently reported issues with the supplier's products, but A123 says it has determined the cause of the defective cells and is working to make sure the failures don't reoccur.

The report also suggests A123 Systems will lower its revenue forecast for the year to $145 million to $175 million. The company originally projected it would generate between $230 million and $300 million.
