BMW Vision EfficientDynamics spotted in Abu Dhabi - is it closer to production? [w/video]

BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept spotted in Abu Dhabi
BMW EfficientDynamics supercar in Abu Dhabi - click above to watch video after the jump

During a recent trip to Abu Dhabi, Teamspeed forum member Captain Stradale caught a glimpse of the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics strutting its stuff for an on-track photo shoot. What makes us most curious, though, is the fact that this gray version of the VED is marginally different-looking than the white concept BMW has paraded around the auto show circuit over the past year (along with the white with blue swirly camo prototype they've shown).

The Vision EfficientDynamics, which is rumored to come into production under the name 'i8', is expected to be powered by a 328-horsepower three-cylinder diesel-hybrid powertrain. The ultra-lightweight production car is tipped to run from 0-100 in just 4.8 seconds, and during normal driving, the new efficient supercar is estimated to achieve 62.5 miles per gallon.

When we'll see the production version of the VED is still unclear, though sources have reported that it will show up in 2013, priced from around $200,000. We can't verify if the gray car in these Teamspeed shots is anything closer to production, but seeing this thing out on the track makes us all the more eager to experience BMW's efficient hotness for ourselves. In the meantime, check out the spy video after the jump and click on the link below to see more photos at Teamspeed. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

MENEZES IN STAR MAZDA CHAMPIONSHIP WITH JUNCOS

American karting star jumps to junior open-wheel ranks with reigning series championship team

COTO DE CAZA, CA ? Competing at the national and international level in karting for 10 years, 16-year old Gustavo Menezes is moving up the motorsports ladder with the announcement of his campaign into the 2011 Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear with Juncos Racing. The Californian is making the move to the junior open-wheel ranks and the second step of the new ?Mazda Road to Indy? driver development program after completing his first season at the Senior level in karting. With the ultimate goal of competing in Formula 1, Menezes? move to Star Mazda is the next rung toward that achievement.

?I am very excited to be competing in the 2011 Star Mazda calendar,? stated Menezes. ?It will be a great challenge for me and I can't wait to get started in St. Petersburg. It is great to be partnering with Juncos again as I raced for them when I was younger in karts. I know they are among the elite teams in this series and I think we will be able to put up a strong fight this season. It is a very big step to come directly from karting to Star Mazda but I am up to the challenge and educating myself each time in the car.?

Menezes spent last week in the state of Florida, walking the isle-way of the Performance Racing Industry show floor making contacts in the industry along with representing his sponsor Oakley. Following the show, Menezes met up with the Juncos Racing operation for a private test session in one of their Star Mazda machines, leaving with high hopes on his new venture.

?The car was amazing,? commenting on the recent private test. ?It is surely the best car I have driven yet. The Goodyear tires give the car immense grip and the downforce is amazing. It definitely has a lot of horsepower and I loved it. I seemed to connect with the team during the test and we worked together very well. One thing different about cars is that the driver to engineer communication is very crucial and their engineer worked really well with me. I think we will have a successful rookie season together and have a very good shot at podiums and possible race wins. I can?t wait to get back in the car.?

Menezes spent the majority of his racing 2010 karting season overseas as he contested the CIK-FIA and WSK schedules in his first year in the competitive KF2 division. Following his performance at the 2009 Superkarts! USA SuperNationals, Menezes was awarded a Jim Russell Future Driver Scholarship and was the youngest of the top-20 finalists in the shootout.

Juncos Racing Team Owner Ricardo Juncos had this to say regarding the addition of Menezes to his team?s 2011 lineup, "I'm very happy to have Gustavo back on the Juncos Racing team. We have known each other really well for six years now, back from when we were racing four classes a weekend in IKF karting in California, and he was only 11 years old when we did our first JICA races together. Having that previous experience working with each other helps a lot moving forward. We did a test with him few days ago, and he really impressed the whole team. It will be a challenge for him and the team to make the jump from karting to the Star Mazda Championship, but we know that we have a lot to give to him. He will be sharing the 2011 season with a perfect combination of experienced drivers - Tatiana Calderon, Joao Horto and Martin Scuncio - and I really believe that with Gustavo's dedication and talent and the whole team working together in 2011, he will learn so much. That will give us a real chance, no doubt, to fight with him for the 2012 Star Mazda Championship."

Menezes will return with the Juncos operation January 3-4 for more testing at the Sebring International Raceway and followed up with another testing session at the Homestead Speedway later in the month. The series schedule and Menezes? series debut will begin March 27 as part of the IndyCar Series opener at the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in Florida. For more information on the Star Mazda Championship series, visit www.starmazda.com

Gustavo is able to compete at this level thanks to his many sponsors, including Tony Kart USA, Red Bull, UP Racing, Safety Park Inc., K1 Speed, K1 Race Gear, Tony Kart Racing Team, On Track Promotions, and Oakley.

About Gustavo Menezes:
At just 16 years-of-age, Coto de Caza, CA?s Gustavo Menezes is considered one of the most promising young karters in America. Gustavo contested an international schedule in 2009 and 2010 that included the WSK International Series and various major events in Europe and the United States, running for Italian karting manufacturer Tony Kart in the KF3 and KF2 categories. In 2007 and 2008, he was the vice-champion in the Junior Intercontinental A (JICA) class on the Stars of Karting national tour, scoring race wins and multiple podiums. For 2011, Menezes will move up the motorsports ladder and campaign his rookie season in the Star Mazda Championship with Juncos Racing. Gustavo?s ultimate goal is to represent the United States in Formula 1. Additional information on Gustavo Menezes can be obtained from his personal website, www.gustavomenezes.com or follow him on Twitter at twitter.com/gustavom28. Land Rover has always been the smart choice for people who wanted to go off-roading - we mean really off-roading, like on safari, running away from charging rhinoceros off-roading. And the nicest things about a Land Rover, was that you could flee that rhinoceros in style and comfort. The LR2 was unveiled to North America at the Los Angeles Auto Show in late 2006 and AutoPacific Senior Consultant Jim Hossack was on hand to have a first look. He liked what he saw.

Interview: AMA Women's Motocross Champion Jessica Patterson

Jessica Patterson is the 2010 AMA Women's National Motocross Champion. Here is Supercross.com's latest interview with JP$.

Annj: Jessica, congratulations on your 2010 AMA Women's National MX Championship. You walked away with some amazing trophies from this summer's race wins .... where do you put all those great awards, and what does it mean to you when you see them?

Jessica: Thanks Annj. I usually go straight to my parents house and drop them all off and let my mom decorate the house with them. But recently she told me that I have started to bring home too many, and to figure out where to put them at my place because her place is now full.

Her suggestion to me was to rent a storage unit if I didn?t want to keep them all over the house. They are all just hanging out at her house right now, and eventually when I decide where I want to move, then I will take them with me and start the decorating.

To see the trophies is pretty cool. It is what I have been working so hard for, and after struggling for for two years and now coming back and winning the championship in 2010, it makes it that much better. Seeing that I have all those number 1 trophies from each race except for two, it reminds me of how good of a year it really was, so it makes me really happy and makes me want to keep pushing.

A: Do you know what your plans are for 2011, specifically defending that number 1 plate in Women's Motocross?

Jessica: I am definitely going to ride for the Star Racing Team again, I don?t know exactly for how long just yet, but I am definitely racing next year, and would like to remain on that Yamaha throughout my career. Yeah, I am going to keep the same program.

Everything has been working out very well. I'll be on my Yamaha, and with my trainer Ryan Hughes again. We are working on other things as well, but right now I am staying with that and working everything else out. I definitely do not want to change what has been working.

A: The 2011 AMA Women?s MX series does not start for about seven months, when does your training really kick in for next season?

Jessica: When I got home after that last race, I started to get lazy. I don't want to do that.

I thought I should get going right away, but Ryno (Ryan Hughes) let me know I needed some time off and that it is good for me.

We will start in January, and that will give us enough time to prepare. I am actually going to have knee surgery - but it is something just real minor, so I will only be out about three weeks, so it is not a big deal.

After that I am going to start to prepare for the Supercross event in Geneva, Switzerland the first weekend in December. So I will go over there for a fews days and ride some supercross. Before you know it, it will be January and I will start getting ready for the year.

A: Does Ryan have you doing anything during the off season then?

Jessica: It is always different. We have a pretty good relationship so we can talk about everything and that is great. We always keep it fun, and if it is not fun, it is not worth it. Keeping it fun and interesting everyday is important.

A: Do you have any advice for girls just getting into motocross?

Jessica: It is hard work for sure, and it took me a while to get there (winning). But work hard at it, and if you set your mind to that is what you want to do - remember to have fun at it!

It does takes time, but the more experience you get the better you will be. Keep pushing forward and keep trying.

A: Tell me more about this Supercross race in Geneva, Switzerland in December ...

Jessica: The promoters have invited two Americans and a couple of MX GP riders ... it is supposed to be more like a demo kind of thing, for us women to kinda' get our feet wet and show that women can ride dirt bikes, and eventually have a series.

I do not know yet if they are lining us up on a gate or not, I do not have all the details as of yet, but they asked if I would come and show everyone what women can do in Supercross.

A: What do you think of the idea of a Women?s Supercross series here in the USA?

Jessica: I really like the idea, but it is hard to get all the girls in the same game. It is a huge thing to do but I think eventually some day it is possible that there could be a series. We just haven?t had that much experience with Supercross riding.

When we found out three years ago that XGames was going to have it, we started practicing. I think with these younger girls coming up, and gaining that needed experience, there is a chance it could happen in the future. But for now we are just taking things how they come and it is all good. I definitely love to race Supercross, I have a lot of fun at it and XGames was a great place to start.

A: You reside in Florida, it is the off-season ... what is going on right now.

Jessica: Things are nice. I have been hanging out with the friends and family. Just relaxing mostly, doing some fishing, and I am planning on hunting soon. Really just spending time with the family because I do not get to see them as much when my focus is racing and traveling.

It is great to be able to hang out with the family and just enjoy everything and not have to worry about too much. I have also been going to a lot of Gator football games with my Grandma lately, because she is a diehard Gator football fan and I grew up liking them also, so we have been having fun during the weekends going to games. It is pretty cool and relaxing to take the weekend to do whatever you want instead of racing every weekend. : )

A: Okay, I have to ask about the hunting Jessica, what do you hunt?

Jessica: Well, mostly we will do some deer hunting, but my Dad asked me if I wanted to go 'gator hunting. My dad likes to hunt for anything, but when I go I mainly just do deer hunting.

A: Football - do you have any other teams you like?

Jessica: I love the University of Florida because my Grandma has had tickets, and the same seats since I can remember. When we go to a home game it is the same people by us every year, so that makes it a lot of fun. We live in Tallahassee so we are partially Florida State fans too.

A: Just a few weeks ago you did a bike swap with another female, how did that go?

Jessica: Yeah, for Speed TV, Melissa Perris and I swapped out rides; she is a 600 rider for Yamaha. We had a couple of days that we did filming. The first day the two of us rode on the street course on the 600s and she taught me how to do that, and we also rode with the host of the show.

We also had fun testing all the new stuff for GYTR Line products and tested those new street bikes for Yamaha, which was very cool. That went really well.

The next day we did Moto and got to ride the new 2011 bikes and all their new GYTR products. We continued the show with that, and we also had a cruiser ride with the Yamaha Star Street Bike. It was a cool week of switching things up.

A: Will your fans get to see you out in California for some of the first Supercross races?

Jessica: I will be out in California in January for sure, and I will be at the races hanging out with guys and signing autographs. I hope to be at most of the California Supercross races.

A: Have fun in Switzerland, we'll be reporting on that race. Thanks for the chat, and we'll see you in January!

Jessica: Thanks Annj!

IMUSA/ITALKART USA Supernats Success

Minnesota-based team earned nine podium finishes en route to third and fourth in the title fight

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - Italian Motors USA/Italkart USA Kart Racing Team entered its 12th SKUSA Supernationals event this year in Las Vegas, Nevada. The IMUSA squad fielded 18 drivers in 5 different classes over the course of the 5 day event. Since competing in past Supernational events, the team has captured three titles in various categories and they were hoping to add to that number with their strong line-up up drivers.

IMUSA/Italkart USA Kart Racing Team fielded 8 drivers in one of the most competitive classes of the weekend, TaG Senior. Brazilian Andre Nicastro led the team by qualifying second with Canadians Remo Ruscitti in third and team leader Michael Valiante in sixth with Fellow Brazilian Bruno Ferreira just outside the top 10. Three other Canadians would also have strong showings: Scott Hargrove, Adam Isman and Taylor Haquard. Most notably, Scott Hargrove put on an impressive drive in the rain winning one of the heat races. Washington State driver Johnny Blair represented the United States well, continually fighting in the top ten in one of the deepest fields.

When the field was set for the final, the four top spots were drivers piloting Italkart chassis powered by IM Tuned Parilla Leopard engines. Andre Nicastro took the checkered flag with Valiante in third, Ferreira in fourth and Ruscitti in sixth. It was one of the most impressive team performances of the weekend. ?It is hard to explain how much effort goes in to an event like this from the testing, preparation and organization. You really don?t know where you stand until the end of the event, so I was more than pleased? said Scott Cowell of IMUSA/Italkart USA Racing Team.

In the shifter classes Kelly Baker, Jim Kidd and Bobby Kim were entered in G1 while Donny Mcgregor was in KZ2. Kidd was fresh off his Lancaster win while Baker has podium at the Supernats for the last four years - narrowly missing the win last season. When it was all said and done, Baker had another solid finish in fourth with Kidd just outside the top ten in eleventh and Kim suffering a DNF. In KZ2 Mcgregor lined up against some of the best drivers in the world and fought for a top ten spot. Unfortunately, a stuck throttle took him out of the main event.

In Tag Masters, Brazilian Fernando Guzzi, along with Canadians Jayson Clunie, Jim Hargrove and Mike Haquard line up for the over 30 class. Guzzi lead the way in fourth with Clunie in eleventh, Hargrove twenty eighth and Hauqard dropping out before the finish.

The youngest group of the IM Team Drivers were Yuric Carvelo, Jamie Mcallister and Keegan Laithwaite representing IMUSA/ Italkart USA in the TAG Jr. Category. New to the event this year was Laithwaite and Mcallister. Unfortunately bad luck prevented Mcallister from making the final while Laithwaite placed twentieth respectively. Carvelo piloting his Italkart Rapido V led the first five laps of the event and while battling for the lead he was put in the wall by another driver. It was disappointing as the young Carvelo had a shot at capturing his first Supernats title.
?All in all it was a great weekend for the team. I am very pleased with the results and the effort from the entire team?, said Team Principal Claudio Valiante.

Richard Petty and Investors Take Control of RPM From George Gillett Jr.

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) -- Richard Petty will once again run his race team and participate in day-to-day operations as chairman of the new ownership group that was announced Monday.

The assets of Richard Petty Motorsports have been sold from George Gillett Jr. to an investment group that consists of Petty, Medallion Financial Corp. and DGP Investments.

"Today is a great day for me, my family, our fans and our wonderful sponsors," Petty said in a statement that listed 10 partners that "have supported me through thick and thin and I thank them from the bottom of my heart."

RPM will field cars for AJ Allmendinger and Marcos Ambrose in 2011.

The transfer of assets has been in the works for several weeks because of Gillett's ongoing financial problems. Debt-laden English soccer club Liverpool recently was sold despite the objection of Gillett and business partner Tom Hicks. And a U.S. hedge fund is suing Gillett over what the firm says is more than $117 million in debt he racked up investing in Liverpool.

The BMW 1 Series looks just like a BMW, only smaller. Its shape, its interior, its leg room, and even its trunk make you think of a much larger car. But unlike larger BMW's, the 1 Series starts at less than $30,000.

Rahal wants long Ganassi career

Graham Rahal says he wants his new deal with Ganassi to be the start of a long relationship with the hugely-successful IndyCar team. Ganassi announced on Thursday that it would run two additional cars in 2011 for Rahal and Indy Lights graduate Charlie Kimball, alongside its established line-up of Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon. The team has won the last two titles with Franchitti, and also took Dixon, Juan Pablo Montoya, Alex Zanardi and Jimmy Vasser to championship success in IndyCar or Champ Car.

Chip Ganassi Set to Double Up IndyCar Champion Team

Chip GanassiReigning IZOD IndyCar Series championship owner Chip Ganassi will be doubling his efforts in the series in 2011, adding two additional cars to his trophy stable.

The team, which would not confirm or comment on the long-rumored news, has scheduled a press conference Thursday in Indianapolis where Ganassi will introduce the newest additions to a driver lineup that already features two-time defending series champ Dario Franchitti and former two-time champ Scott Dixon.

Second-generation driver Graham Rahal -- son of 1986 Indy 500 winner Bobby Rahal -- and Charlie Kimball, 25, a young talent moving up from the feeder Indy Lights Series, will campaign for Ganassi next year, working out of a "satellite" team shop rented from drag racing legend Don Prudhomme.

Rahal, 21, is the youngest IndyCar Series winner in history, scoring his only victory in the 2008 season-opener at St. Petersburg, Fla. However, he did not race full time last season. Kimball will be making his debut in the series.

Thursday's announcement will also confirm full-time sponsorship for both Rahal and Kimball -- significant for the series, which had several high-profile teams struggling to find primary corporate backing in 2010. In a unusual twist, Rahal actually announced a two-year sponsorship deal with TBC Corporation -- which owns several automobile tire retailers -- at this season's finale in Homestead, Fla. before having a contract in place with a team.

MXAdventures: My take on the 450 Top Ten Steel City

The 450 class did crown Chad Reed the Champion at Budds Creek but there was still plenty of racing action left at Steel City as the guys fought hard for the remaining position. Chad Reed himself came into the last race with the championship title giving him a break to relax and enjoy the day. Unfortunately for Chad, his relaxing day would turn upside down by Moto 2. As I stood under the Suzuki tent waiting to interview the new 250cc Champ, Chad Reed zoomed past me, jumped off his bike, dropped it and ran to his trailer. It was mentioned that Chad was still having stomach issues and was sick as he lined up for the last Moto of the day. Not the way you want to remember your last race of the season but that?s how things go sometimes.

Photobucket

On a positive note, Tommy Hahn earned his first win and took his first overall victory at Steel City. Going 1-4 on the day, Tommy?s had his best race all year navigating him straight to a 5th place in the series; and taking a victory on the last weekend is a great way to end the season. Tommy actually came into the last race with no sleep the night before because of a bad case of food poisoning and he was not really excited about Steel City but after his win he had a change of heart for this race. I did interview Tommy right after his stepped off that podium. Find out who he dedicated his win to in my interview with him, check my blog!

Photobucket

Andrew Short?s 2009 Motocross season ended with a 2nd place in the series compared to 2008?s 3rd place finish. This time around Andrew was strong but most of his best races were towards the beginning of the season. Either way, Andrew kept his bike rolling and the points coming at Steel City Raceway with a 5th in each Moto.

Photobucket

It was a close point?s battle for Ivan Tedesco and overall his season was much more consistent than some of his closest competitors. In the end Ivan?s seven podiums, and that 1-1 from Thunder Valley was good enough for 3rd place in the 2009 Motocross Nationals series. Add to the mix Ivan?s results at Steel City with a 4th and 3rd put him back on the podium for a 2nd overall on the day; what a great way to end another amazing year of Motocross but Ivan still has work to do as a member to Team USA .This will be histhe third year on the team ashe gets ready to head to Italy for the Motocross of Nations.

Photobucket

Hands down Michael Byrne rode a consistent race this summer. Now he didn?t have a win but Michael was on the podium a handful of times and also was the only 450 racer to score a point in EVERY Moto and stay in the top 10 in almost every race giving him a 4th place standing on the series; and what?s this, he duplicated his 2008 series score.

Photobucket

Sixth place in the Motocross Nationals series went to Josh Grant this year. He missed the last few races and couldn?t finish out the series after a crash he had at X-Games.

Photobucket

Last year he rode in the 250 Class and was 20th at the end of the season; this year Justin Brayton took on the 450 class and far improved his overall results. The final race of the season went to Justin; from that Holeshot to the finish line Justin lead the race and earned his first podium of the Motocross season. With an 11th from Moto 1 and that first place in Moto 2, Justin averaged a third place overall at Steel City Raceway. With that last race win of the 450?s and a good season altogether, Justin finishes out the series in seventh.

Photobucket

Nick Wey knows how to score points; it?s a lot of hard work, never give up attitude, and lots of determination and he always managed a handful of points at the end of the day. By the final flag at Steel City Raceway, Nick?s scores would add up to an 8th place in the series.

Photobucket

Cody Cooper earned a 9th overall in the Motocross Nationals by season end. Cody raced his second full year at the 450 class, last year he earned a fifth and in 07? he was 22nd.

Photobucket

Jimmy Albertson started off the season in 20th after Glen Helen and kept working each and every race until he was in 10th place by Steel City

Photobucket

Okay, one personal story I want to share with you happened to me on the starting gate at the last race. It was during the first 450 Moto, I was doing my normal spin around the starting gate, taking pictures of all the guys as they lined up at the gate and just as I reached the ?dog-house? a Moto-official stopped me in my tracks and said?wait right here, this is going to be fun?. Well at this point I was standing dead center of the starting gate right in front of the doghouse and the guys were all lined up to take their parade lap.

Photobucket

This was a new adventure for me and I was trilled see what was next. Of course I snapped a few photos of the guys right before the gate dropped. It really wassuch acool experience to be standing in front of the gate when it fell and have all 40 guys staring right in my direction waiting for the official cue, who was standing right behind me. The sounds from the bikes asthe gate dropped and the guys flying past me was extremely exhilarating to say the least!! I've alwyas loved the start of the race, now I have a whole newpoint of view, Thanks guys!!

Photobucket

Well, there?s still a ton of other racers who I?d love to write about but it will have to wait till next time. I had such a great time at the final round of the Supercross and all summer long and I can?t wait to do it all over again next year. To the many individuals, racers, and industry folks who made my summer of motocross an amazing adventure, thank you, I had the best time! Stay tuned to my MX*Adventures as we draw near the 2010 Supercross season. There?s still a lot going on in the industry and I will keep you posted on everything that comes my way.

Don?t forget to check out all my racing pictures from this summer and leave your comments!!
