Nailing It

The NASCAR iRacing.com Class A Series blew into the “Windy City” for Week 7 of their twelve week season. Chicagoland Speedway always presents some of the best door-to-door online racing of the NiCLAS season, and this week was no different. With speeds topping the 200mph mark into vastly different corners, nailing the setup was the key to success over the course of Week Seven. One person who seems to be nailing the setup every week, no matter the track size or configuratation, is NiCLAS points leader Kile Gottula. Gottula found himself in a tie with NASCAR iRacing.com Pro Series contender Robert Hall for this week’s top honors. Gottula won three of his four starts to extend his lead in the season standings, while Hall made one trip to victory lane [...]

2010 AMA Supercross and Motocross Champion Ryan Dungey embarks on new endeavor with Red Bull KTM in search of another championship

SX and MX Champ rejoins mentor Roger De Coster at Austrian brand

Courtesy Feld Motor Sports - In just two seasons of Supercross Class competition, Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, MN, is already considered one of the fastest motorcycle riders on the planet. In 2010, the five year pro became just the second rookie in history to win the Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, crown and came a mere 10 points short of defending his title one year ago. After two strong seasons in the Supercross Class, Dungey is making the biggest move of his young career for 2012, joining Red Bull KTM.

Since turning pro late in 2006, Ryan Dungey has ridden for the Factory Suzuki effort. He was handpicked by legendary rider and team manager Roger De Coster to become the new face of the brand following the retirement of Ricky Carmichael, and became an instant sensation. Following two years of championship-contending success in the Supercross Lites Class, Dungey captured his first title in 2009 with the Western Regional Supercross Lites Championship, and subsequently captured three more championships over the next year-and-a-half to claim every AMA-sanctioned title by the age of 20.

Throughout the span, Dungey achieved his success under the tutelage of De Coster, becoming a faster, smarter and more confident rider every step of the way. Dungey’s maturation into a star was evident, and it culminated with the most successful rookie season of all time during the 2010 campaign.

After climbing his way to the top of the motocross world, last year Dungey was forced to deal with the departure of De Coster from Suzuki, a brand that he guided and brought to the pinnacle of the sport. Dungey’s mentor assumed the team manager role at KTM, who revamped its factory racing efforts in America in hopes of replicating its European success, and after seeing what he did for Suzuki, tabbed De Coster to do so. With De Coster no longer in the fold at Suzuki, many wondered how Dungey would fare. While he did not post the same numbers as his championship-winning season, Dungey still saw success in 2011, and ultimately was a fixture in the title fight until the final race of the year.

While Dungey's one lone victory of last season suggests it was an off year for the reigning champion, he was in fact one of the most consistent riders in the series, posting 13 podium finishes in 17 races, the most of any rider in Monster Energy Supercross. In fact, if not for losing a drive chain in a freak occurrence at Anaheim 2, which resulted in a DNF, Dungey very well could have secured back-to-back titles.

Nevertheless, without De Coster by his side, it appeared as if Dungey was not the same rider of his illustrious rookie year. With his contract coming to an end, Dungey revealed he would not return to Suzuki prior to the end of the 2011 racing season, making him the biggest free agent in many years. The rumor mill was in full effect almost immediately, with most indications pointing to a reunion between Dungey and De Coster at KTM. Regardless of where he landed, it was sure to be the most newsworthy move of the offseason.

News of Dungey negotiating with the likes of Joe Gibbs Racing, American Honda, and Chad Reed at TwoTwo Motorsports came to light over the course of the next couple months before the formal announcement that Dungey was heading to KTM was given at the beginning of October.

Ryan Dungey says "Roger wasn't a deciding factor in my move to KTM, but it definitely helped. I've worked with him from the beginning of my professional career and we have four or five years under our belt. I know that if Roger says the bike and the team are good, then it is. I guess the trust I have in him, our friendship, and what we’ve been able to build over the last few years has helped and made the transition in coming to KTM a little easier. But more than anything, the level of commitment to win races and win championships was a challenge I looked forward to."

In De Coster's first season at KTM, the team made significant strides, with Andrew Short and Mike Alessi giving the brand moderate success. Now, with a full year of his influence behind them, Red Bull KTM is ready to challenge for a championship with Dungey. The new era for both Dungey and the brand kicked off just a couple weeks following the announcement, with an impressive runner-up showing at the Monster Energy Cup.

"I'm really glad I raced the Monster Cup" said Dungey. "I first decided not to because of the amount of time I had on the bike. I just wanted to be ready. But, to be honest, things were going really well. The bike was coming along a lot quicker than we all thought. From that point forward, we figured let's go out there and race to see what we got. Although we didn't win, we came in second, and I think it was a great night. And, we were able to walk away from that race knowing what we needed to improve on. We went back to the drawing board to see what we can do, and the next week (we) were out there testing, making improvements."

The chance to compete prior to the start of the Monster Energy Supercross season could prove to be invaluable for Dungey and his team in the long run. With a total of four past champions set to line up on the starting gate in January, the Supercross Class field is arguably the deepest it's ever been in over 30 years of Monster Energy Supercross. Any and every advantage that a team or a rider can get could ultimately be the deciding factor in the championship next May.

Dungey continues: "I think for the 2012 supercross season we have our work cut out for us, for sure. There's a lot of great riders out there and a lot of talented people, but I think in the long run for us, we need to work hard and do what we have to do. I think we're driven and will do all that we can on any given night. In the amount of time I've been on the bike, things are moving well. Right from the get-go, I felt like the bike was really comfortable. I adapted to it really well. From that point forward, it was just minor changes. You can do so many things with a factory bike that it allows you to make something fit and work the way you want it to. I think it is just been a matter of finding those little spots that are going to help. As we keep moving along, making more and more progress, it’s really nice because nobody settles. Everyone is always pushing for more, so for us, we're digging deeper and deeper to get better and better. As a team, I think we have a great atmosphere. There are a lot of hard-working people and everyone is 100% dedicated to win races, as am I. That's what (means) more for me. Throughout my career, I've tried to surround myself with good people - people who are driven, who want to get to that next level and are also knowledgeable. I think we've got a great group of people with a lot of knowledge and it doesn't hurt that we all want to win, which in the long run brings success and achievement."

Even with a new team and being saddled with so much change for the first time as a pro, Dungey's goal is to obviously win a championship. That same goal is at the heart of Red Bull KTM, and with the proven guidance of De Coster at the helm, the 2012 season marks the brand's best chance to achieve success in the Supercross Class, a division in which it has never won. No stranger to making history, Dungey eagerly awaits the opportunity to write some more.

The 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, season gets underway in just a matter of weeks, from Angel Stadium on Anaheim, Calif., on Saturday, January 7.

The 2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship Season Celebration

This year's AMA Motocross Banquet & Season Celebration was held in a magnificent banquet room at the Pala Resort & Casino. The room was decorated beautifully, lined with motocross décor, as well as a stage decorated with the championship bikes and awards. The line-up of food, appetizers, desserts, and beverages was very elegant and delicious.

After dinner, the awards ceremony began. Jason Weigandt, along with Tim Cotter hosted the show. And of course Jason started it just like he does many of his shows - after slamming down an energy drink.

Jason went on to talk about each round of this summer's AMA Motocross Nationals, with a list of funny jokes pertaining to all the good and bad situations at each of the races. After that, the awards and trophies were handed out.

The night was filled with special memories, good times, and laughs. One poignant moment was when Kevin Windham accepted the award for 'Sportsperson of the Year'. Kevin always has a great way of expressing himself, but made a great comment towards his friend & the team manager, Mike LaRocco. He commented on Mike's motivation, that pushed Kevin to work hard and do his best ... it was touching, but at the same time very funny.

SUPERKARTS! USA CONFIRMS 2011 PRO TOUR CHAMPIONS

Eight champions crowned with top-three SKUSA number plates going to wide range of successful drivers
TEMECULA, CA – The second season of the Superkarts! USA Pro Tour completed last month with the running of the SuperNationals XV in Las Vegas outside the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino. Following a record-breaking event that witnessed over 500 drivers competing, the eight championship categories closed out the final stop of the five round title chase - and decided just who would be part of the SKUSA ‘Circle of Champions.’ In each of the eight divisions, the top three drivers earned the coveted national number plates for the 2012 season in addition to the championship purse.
The two headline categories -- S1 Pro Stock Moto and TaG Senior -- were awarded roughly $18,000 in cash and prizes to split toward their championship fund. Superkarts! USA welcomed its first international driver to its champion alumni in S1. New Zealand’s Daniel Bray locked up the class title at the SuperNationals following a successful 2011 season. The 24-year old was the event winner at the SKUSA SpringNationals with two wins, and while the feature results were not as high as he had hoped, Bray scored the second highest total at the SummerNationals to lead the standings heading into the SuperNationals. Overcoming a mechanical issue in qualifying, Bray fought strong through the heat races and the main event to land third in the main event to secure the title. California driver Tom Dyer was his closest rival throughout the season. The veteran was the top performer at the SummerNationals, but come up just short in the end thanks to an upsetting finish at the SuperNationals to close the year second in the standings. S1 rookie Lukas Johnson was impressive in his first season, standing on the podium in three of the five feature races to earn the #3 plate for the 2012 season.
Consistency and speed were two keys to the championship performance put in by TaG Senior driver Brett Felkins. The 18-year-old from California finished the year on the podium in all five main events, including two victories. Through the SpringNationals and SummerNationals, including all the heat races and features, Felkins finished inside the top-four in all but one. Despite early issues, Felkins worked his way forward at the SuperNationals to earn a career-best fifth place in the category. Keeping with the rookie trend found in the Pro categories, 15-year old Dakota Dickerson impressed in his first season in the Senior category. Making his first-ever Senior start at the SpringNationals, Dickerson drove to two podium finishes to end up second overall for the event. Staying out of trouble at the SummerNationals, Dickerson held onto the second position in the standings with two top-eight finishes. A tough finish at the SuperNationals was his only blemish on the year -- and he will proudly carry the #2 plate in 2012. Finishing third was Las Vegas’ Matt Johnson. A veteran of the sport, the 32-year old overcame adversity nearly each weekend to help earn his place toward the top of the standings. A DNF to begin the year, he bounced back the next day to score the second feature win of the SpringNationals. A third and fourth place at the SummerNationals solidified his position in the title chase, and a seventh at the SuperNationals was just enough to keep him in the third position overall.
The S2 Semi-Pro Stock Moto category for 2011 was a preview of the future shifterkart stars in Superkarts! USA. Three young guns led the way this season as Kyle Hathcox emerged to earn the class championship. The 19-year old from Arizona was impressive at his home-state event in the Spring, scoring finishes of 1-2. Another runner-up at the SummerNationals followed, including a DNF that kept the point chase close. After qualifying issues put him near the back at the SuperNationals, Hathcox drove like a champion in the heat races to gain much-needed points and a top-10 starting spot. Finishing 10th in the main event locked up Hathcox’s first Pro Tour title. Chasing him were Cory Milne and Nicky Freytag. Milne was hot the second half of the season after an up-and-down SpringNationals. A double victory weekend at the SummerNationals put him in contention. While the Colorado driver recorded the best results of the contenders at the SuperNationals, placing fifth in the main event, it was not enough and he would have to settle for second by just 38 points. Freytag was consistent in the main events on the year, but his heat race results hurt him in the long run. Four top-four feature results, with three podiums, filled out his resume heading to the SuperNationals. A better heat effort put Freytag in position to challenge for the title, but falling down to ninth in the main event hurt his chances and put him third overall on the season.
Jimmy McNeil was head of the class all season in the S4 Master Stock Moto category. Four straight victories heading into the SuperNationals all but clinched the title prior to the Vegas event. The Californian was in the hunt to defend his SuperNats crown until a mechanical issue took him out of contention in the main event. By that time, enough points had been earned for McNeil to secure his first Pro Tour title. Arizona driver Nick Firestone was one of two other drivers to stand on the podium through the year twice. Firestone visited the second step once at the SpringNationals and the third step once at the SummerNationals. Missing out on the podium by one position, Firestone’s S4 debut at the SuperNationals helped secure the #2 plate for 2012. Earning the #3 plate for 2012 is Illinois driver Lance Lane. Thanks to a podium finish on the opening day at SpringNationals, Lane remained in the title chase with a couple of top-10 finishes. Keeping that momentum through the SuperNationals, Lane finished the year third in the standings.
It was an emotional year for Ohio driver Brian McHattie. Racing in the memory of a karting mentor, McHattie drove with determination and a heavy heart en route to the TaG Master title. Three straight feature wins and a runner-up finish put McHattie in the driver’s seat for the championship heading to the SuperNationals. Despite a tough week, McHattie persevered in the main event to finish a strong sixth, and secure the point lead to take home the #1 plate for next season. The battle for second was close, with Nevada’s David Harwin edging out California’s Larry Fraser. Harwin ended McHattie’s win streak at the SummerNationals, backing it up with two top-four previous finishes. A tough event in Vegas kept Harwin from earning any ground in the title chase, holding on to the second spot. Fraser was solid for much of the year, recording four podium finishes heading into the SuperNationals. A qualifying misshape put Fraser behind early, as he battled back only to place 17th in the main event. The early success on the year secured him the #3 plate for the 2012 season.
The battle in the S5 Junior Stock Moto division was a two-driver affair. Austin Schimmel and Alex Tartaglia placed in the top-three last year and returned to the chase in 2011. They exchanged victories at the SpringNationals, with Tartaglia getting the edge at the SummerNationals to lead the standings by 30 points heading into the SuperNationals. Up to the challenge, Schimmel stepped up to the occasion by posting solid heat results and scoring the main event victory. The performance helped him move to the top of the standings and clinch the 2011 Pro Tour championship. Tartaglia struggled in Vegas, despite coming back to finish fourth in the main event and one spot better in the standings than the previous year. Ryan Rudolph, the only other driver to score a feature win on the year, finished second at the SuperNationals to secure the third place in the championship chase.
Unpredictable could be the best way to describe the season in TaG Junior. Both on the track and in the championship chase, you never knew what was going to happen. Heading into the SuperNationals, Jake Craig and Canadian Parker Thompson led the standings, with Austin Dement in third. Craig and Thompson were forced to miss the Vegas event, leaving Dement a chance to steal the title. Despite two wins on the year, Dement was hampered in the chase for the title by a disqualification at the SpringNationals. With a very competitive field at the SuperNationals, Dement battled hard and was the top American driver in the main event with a fifth place finish. The complete performance however was not enough to leap over Craig and Thompson in the standings. Craig, from California, was awarded the class championship off three top-three finishes - one victory included - on the year to beat out Thompson by 27 points. Thompson recorded four straight top-five finishes, including a victory, in his first year in the Junior ranks to carry the #2 plate next season.
Introduced to the Superkarts! USA organization last season, the TaG Cadet class has seen just one driver at the top - Colton Herta. The 2010 champion defended his title this past year with a similar dominating performance. With an event sweep at the SpringNationals, Herta nearly pulled off another at the SummerNationals until a mechanical issue ended his race early on day one of the SummerNationals. With a near perfect score, Herta was recording solid results in Vegas until he was involved in a wreck in the main event, ending his chance at his first SuperNationals win. The plus side of the week was earning his second TaG Cadet title. For his efforts, Herta will once again represent SKUSA to compete at the Rok Cup International Final in Italy in October 2012, a value of $5,000. Washington driver Davey Manthei Jr. ended the year second in the standings. A winner at the SummerNationals, Manthei stood on the podium three times on the year en route to the vice-champion position. Colorado’s Flinn Lazier put in a similar performance, with three straight third-place finishes to secure the third spot in the championship chase.
All eight of the drivers that earned the #1 plate in 2011 will be part of the ‘Circle of Champions’ program for 2012. Each will receive free entries, race tires, and race fuel/oil for the 2012 SKUSA Pro Tour, valued at $2,800 each, all with the goal of keeping the best drivers in the sport and to support its racers as they continue to develop as karters. 2011 PRI Trade Show: A Show Of Strength For the Racing Industry In Orlando!

Exhibit option renewals pour in, after substantial buying in all categories marked the 24th Annual PRI Trade Show as a solid success for exhibitors and attending buyers!
The energy level was revved up high all three days of the 24th Annual Performance Racing Industry Trade Show as attending buyers packed the exhibits of over 1,000 racing industry suppliers to make their all-important inventory decisions regarding new racing products for 2012. The exhibiting companies went all out in bringing ingenious new racing technology to Orlando, and displaying it so creatively. There's nothing like it!
“It was a very strong show,” said Steve Lewis, PRI Trade Show producer. “We had three big exhibit days with substantial buying in all categories and exhibitors writing orders well into the afternoon. More important than it being a good week for PRI, it was a really good week for the racing industry. What was going on in that building for the those three days will affect people at race tracks and racing businesses around the world."
Exhibit option renewal forms began pouring into the Show office on the final two days of the PRI Trade Show, and a steady stream are being received daily at the PRI offices in Laguna Beach, California.
The PRI Trade Show is the world's largest gathering of racing professionals, who come to view the exhibits of over 1,000 racing industry suppliers. It took place December 1-3, 2011, at the Orange County Convention Center, in Orlando. The number of exhibitors, at 1048, was up over 2010. There were 170 new and returning companies exhibiting at the PRI Trade Show that were not on the Show floor plan the previous year.

Quality Buyers
“PRI is a great show,” said Mark Kostrzewa, Motor State Distributing. “Our customers vary from drag racing to circle track, not just domestically but worldwide, and the PRI Trade Show really gives us exposure to an international clientele. We see a fair amount of our international customers here every year and that gives us the opportunity to have a face-to-face with them. That exposure is just immense.”
“We’ve been very, very busy since the show opened,” said Dale Aldo, Motorsports Marketing Manager for Mopar, on Friday at the Show. Mopar highlighted its high-performance engine programs with its Gen-2 Hemi and Gen-3 Hemis, as well as the Mopar Drag-Pak, in its exhibit. “We haven’t even had an opportunity to walk the show because we’ve been too busy.”
Ron Sutton, who owns the racing retail operation, Star Racing Supply, in Sacramento, California, said he arrived in Orlando with specific suppliers with whom he wished to meet. "We take this opportunity to meet them face to face and learn more about their products to bring them into our store so we can sell it to our customers and bring something new to the western part of the United States that may be just on the eastern part. It helps them expand their business and helps us expand our business at the same time."
Race car builder Swift Engineering, based in San Clemente, California, is expanding and using PRI to shop for equipment. “It’s great to be at PRI,” said Clayton Triggs, of Swift Engineering Inc. “We’re expanding our equipment base and we have 60,000 square feet to fill. We’re looking to add autoclaves and lathes, as well as some additional machinery and we’re very happy with what we’ve found. The only downside is that my feet hurt because there’s so much to see here.”
“We’re here at the PRI Trade Show because most every company we do business with is here, and we’re here to check out the new technology,” said legendary engine builder Ed Pink, of Ed Pink Racing Engines. “There’s a lot of people here and we’ve seen a lot of new vendors here. It’s an excellent show.”
The popular trailer section of the PRI Trade Show had excellent buyer traffic, too, as exhibitors reported strong sales. "This may have been one of the most successful PRI Trade Shows I have ever been a part of, and I've been coming to this show for over 10 years," said Rich Schnippel, of inTech Trailers. "Our booth had extremely steady traffic the entire show. We booked more sales at the Show than any previous year."
The Show attracted approximately 38,000 buyers from throughout the US, and over 70 countries. There was a higher percentage of first-time visitors to the PRI Trade Show than in 2010. Attendees must be part of a racing busines or professional race team to enter.

International
The PRI Trade Show has evolved into a key business event globally for the worldwide racing marketplace. “This is the fourth time in the last five years we’ve been here,” Ben Barlett, of the Australian AAAA. “We have 21 Australian companies exhibiting here and it has surpassed our expectations. We do shows all around the world, but no other motorsports shows here in the U.S. – just PRI.”

Ashley Garrett, of U.S. Legends Cars International, added, “The Show has been great for us. We love this show because it has a good international flair to it. Our growth overseas has been phenomenal for us and we can attribute most of that to the PRI Show. The international buyers don’t buy four cars, they might buy 40 cars. In fact, we have a buyer here from Australia looking to buy 10 Bandoleros today.”

Another PRI exhibitor may be bringing more to the U.S. in 2013 than racing products as the Brazilian Formula Truck Series was exhibiting one of the series’ truck tractors on-site in preparation for its debut.

A record number of countries--70--were represented in the attendance at this year's PRI Trade Show.

Race Industry Week

No less than six major events ran in conjunction with the show beginning on Monday the week of the Show:
•Advanced Engineering Technology Conference (AETC)
•Claude Roelle’s Optimum G Advanced Vehicle Dynamics Seminar
•Professional Motorsports Circuit Owners and Operators Convention
•International Council of Motorsport Sciences (ICMS) Annual Congress
•PRI Industry Roundtable
•EFI University Training Course on EFI in Racing Applications

All were well attended. Altogether, the week of the PRI Trade Show features over 35 conferences, seminars, social gathering and other events.

“It’s been extremely positive," said Brian Reese, of the AETC. "Every year continues to get stronger with the promotion of PRI. Our attendance is up from last year. Engine technology is universal. We have attendees from the professional engine builder to the grass-oots builders to racers and speed shops and manufacturer engineers. All types of racing, circle track to drag racers to marine and motorcycles. It’s a great interaction with the PRI Show. It adds value for everyone involved. The PRI Show is on the radar for everybody and it helps us promote the event.”
Gill Campbell, CEO of Mazda Raceway, Laguna Seca, attended the Circuit Owners Convention. “I see the Promoters Convention as a huge tool. I find it very useful. Getting together with your peers in the industry, there’s no other training ground you have as a promoter. You only learn from what other people do, so this is a tremendous showcase for new ideas," she said.
“The good thing about the Roundtable is the people you’re talking to get it,” said SPEED’s Miller. “They’re all racers. They all understand the history of racing and they have a lot of good questions. You get all of these people from different walks of racing and it’s amazing how similar their thoughts are on a lot of issues that the industry faces today.”
Jon Potter, executive director of the ICMS, said the event scored very high marks with attending motorsports safety professionals, including surgeons, race sanction safety executives, race track emergency personnel and more. "The 2011 Congress was extremely successful. After tabulation, we rated 3.78 out of 4 in meeting our objectives. That will keep you on the dean's list!" he exclaimed. "The ICMS-PRI marriage is a huge success. Our people really enjoyed the show and being able to attend both."

Grand Opening Breakfast
Over 3,000 members of the racing industry attended the Grand Opening Breakfast, with Dave Despain creating a live presentation of his popular Wind Tunnel TV show. His special guests included race journalist Robin Miller, NASCAR star Ken Schrader, NASCAR Camping World Truck series star Cole Whitt, IndyCar star Alex Tagliani, Formula 3 Italia Rookie of the Year Michael Lewis and a special appearance by legendary drag racer Don "Big Daddy" Garlits.

Budweiser sponsored the Happy Hour reception that starts immediately upon closing of the first day of the PRI Trade Show on Thursday. Thousands of members of the racing industry gathered in the lobby of the Orange County Convention Center to mix and mingle with their industry friends.

Red Bull Kart Fight at PRI Powered By Rotax
In an outstanding night of action-packed racing under the lights before a standing-room-only crowd of 3,500 members of the racing industry, Jan Heylen won the 2011 All-Star division race at the Red Bull Kart Fight at PRI Powered by Rotax. He drove a CRG kart for the CRG USA team.
Jay Howard drove an Arrow chassis for the KartSport-Arrow team to a second-place finish, while the UK’s Ben Cooper, fresh off his Senior Division win in Dubai at the 2011 Rotax Max Challenge Finals, charged from P16 to claim the final spot on the podium. He drove a Praga kart, made by Intrepid, for the Praga North America team.
The Red Bull Kart Fight featured famed drivers from diverse series such as NASCAR Cup, X Games, IndyCar, ALMS, Grand-Am and the NASCAR Camping World Truck series.
“I got a little lucky with the lapped traffic,” said a modest Heylen, who won the last big kart race held at the PRI Trade Show. “I’ll be back next year,” added Heylen.
“This is a fantastic event,” said Howard. “I’m looking forward to coming back next year.”
Management Seminars

On Friday and Saturday mornings, the PRI Trade Show offers its slate of three management seminars per day, before the opening of the exhibit hall. Topics covered this year included Tips For Race Engine Builders in a Tough Economy; Managing the Race Business Website, Marketing & Business Strategies For Up-And-Coming Racers; Social Media Marketing; Opportunities in the Legends Market and Inside The Heat Treating Process.

2012

Preparation for the 2012 PRI Trade Show, which will take place Nov. 29-Dec. 1 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando officially began at 4:01 p.m. Saturday, right after the close of a very successful 2011 event.

Not, at least, until this year's Los Angeles Auto Show. The 2007 show was all about how consumers can have their big vehicles, and fuel efficiency too. Fitting comfortably into that category, and still towing over 6,000 pounds is the new Chevy Silverado Hybrid Pickup Truck.

Moto GP Germany

Round 10 of the Moto GP world championship took place under the sweltering summer sun in Germany at the Sachsenring track on the 15th July. Many feared that tyres would be a deciding factor as the excessive heat might cause the tyres to break up over the 30 lap race.

On pole started the Australian chamipionship leading Ducati rider Casey Stoner out to prove that being on pole is not cursed as many fear and the only way he could do that was to win. Starting in a very good 2nd position on the grid was Dani Pedrosa on his Repsol Honda and alongside him closing out the front row was Marco Melandri on his Gresini Honda. Randy de Puniet started in 4th place on his Kawasaki, lining up next to him was the American John Hopkins on his Rizla Suzuki and aside him the ever-threatening Valentino Rossi on his Fiat Yamaha. Following these top 6 riders from qualifying was, in order, Loris Capirossi, Alex Barros, Sylvain Guintoli, Shinya Nakano closing out the top 10 and Chris Vermeulen started in 11th. Nicky Hayden started way down in 14th place, his team having already apologised to the Texas Tornado for not providing him with a decent bike for the weekend as he had struggled with various problems since Friday.

Dani Pedrosa got off to a good start and led into turn one, Casey Stoner in 2nd place and bringing up 3rd was Marco Melandri, coming out in 4th after the 1st corner was John Hopkins. On lap 2 Marco Melandri got passed Stoner who didn't seem to put up too much of a fight. Casey Stoner re-passed Melandri at the end of lap 2 and then got passed Dani Pedrosa as well, but only for a few metres as Pedrosa came straight back at him to re-take the lead of the German Moto GP. With 3 laps gone Carlos Checa went down but was able to eventually get his bike back up and into the pits. There his team changed his gear lever which had broken and he went back out onto the track with his race obviously over.

Valentino Rossi found himself stuck behind the green Kawasaki of Randy de Puniet and not being able to find a way past the Frenchman. Chris Vermeulen's race was effectively over as it was announced that he needed to serve a "driver-through" penalty for jumping the start of the race. Frenchman Sylvain Guintoli's race came to an early end as he crashed out with 26 laps to go.

Then came one of the most important parts of the race. Valentino Rossi pushed too hard into a corner trying to pass on the inside of Randy de Puniet and he and his bike went down sliding across the asphalt and into the gravel trap. Rossi struggled with his bike to try and get back into the race but simply couldn't; his handlebars were broken in the fall.

With a full 22 laps left in the race Dani Pedrosa was already starting to pull away from Casey Stoner and his Ducati with his lead being extended to slightly more than 0.8 seconds. On lap 10 Alex Barros crashed out on his Ducati, his race over immediately while he clutched his injured right hand tightly to his chest to avoid further injury to it. With 14 laps to go Nicky Hayden passes fellow American Colin Edwards while the gap from Pedrosa's Repsol Honda to Aussie Stoner's Ducati had grown to as much as over 2.5 seconds. With 12 laps left of the race not only was Stoner falling further and further back from away from the Spaniard Pedrosa, who was now lapping the German track 2 seconds faster than the Australian, but he was now comeing into the clutches of the chasing Marco Melandri and Loris Capirossi. Into corner one of the Sachsenring gp track Stoner became the center of a Capirossi and Melandri sandwich as they both tried to pass him, Melandri taking the outside line and Capirossi the inside. Melandri ran wide though and had to abort the pass while Capirossi went through and up into 2nd place.

While Dani Pedrosa rode unchallenged at front heading to his first win in over a year, the rest of the pack were fighting for the final positions and points. With 9 laps left in the race Marco Melandri managed to pass the defending Stoner who was clearly just trying to hang on with his tyres having fallen away drastically by now. He now was in damage limitation mode with both Nicky Hayden and John Hopkins closing in on the current championship leader. On lap 23 the flying Texas Tornado was able to get passed both John Hopkins and Casey Stoner, Hayden's compatriot Colin Edwards was also able to pass the other American John Hopkins. With 6 laps to go Nicky Hayden even managed to pass Marco Melandri for the final podium spot, having started way down in 14th place. With 4 laps left Casey Stoner passed Marco Melandri for 5th position.

So, the top 7 race positions:

1) Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda)

2) Loris Capirossi (Ducati)

3) Nikcy Hayden (Repsol Honda)

4) Colin Edwards

5) Casey Stoner

6) Marco Melandri

7) John Hopkins

FISCHER EARNS FIRST PROKART CHALLENGE NORTH VICTORY AT PRAIRIE CITY

TaG Senior driver bags first main event triumph while Woolf takes second straight S2 feature win

PRAIRIE CITY, CA – Nearly every category at the second round of the Superkarts! USA ProKart Challenge North program - contested at the All Star Karting facility in Prairie City, CA - saw a new winner. The competitors in the seven divisions battled wet conditions throughout the race day, providing an added challenge to the technical 3/4-mile ‘Grand Prix’ circuit – with all drivers in attendance earning a 100-point ‘rain’ bonus toward the season ending championship. Leading the way for those first-time winners on March 26 was TaG Senior driver TJ Fischer, who earned his first series victory. The lone exception was S2 Semi-Pro Stock Moto driver Jared Woolf, earning his second straight feature win in the category.

Bronson Eggert led the way during the Peterson Wealth Management-sponsored TaG Senior qualifying session, posting a 50.207-lap to earn the pole position for heat one. Fischer was just a bit off, as both posted faster times than round one winner Austin Elliott. Eggert led all 12 laps of heat one, while Fischer fell to fourth early but regained the spots he lost to Elliott and Jess Peterson. Fischer inherited the top spot when both Eggert and Peterson were unable to start the second heat with mechanical issues, running to the win with Elliott in tow. Fischer continued on through the main event, going wire to wire from the pole position to outrun Elliott for his first series victory. Shelby Sander completed her series debut with a third place finish and the second straight event with a female driver on the podium for the class.

2010 S5 Junior Stock Moto SKUSA Pro Tour champion Daniel Langon was the driver to beat following qualifying in the Sunshine Daydream-sponsored S2 Semi-Pro Stock Moto category, putting down a hot lap of 49.918. A poor start to begin heat one put him behind early, but not for long as he recovered back to the top spot by lap three, going on to take the win. Langon put down a better opening lap for heat two and led the way – until a charging Woolf began to pressure. After retiring on the opening lap of heat one, Woolf drove up from the tail of the grid to Langon’s bumper, taking over the lead as they took the white flag. Woolf scored the win with Langon in second. At the start of the feature, Langon fell behind once again with two competitors from other categories sliding in between him and Woolf. That was until lap six when Woolf went off course and lost positions, including the lead to Langon. On lap 10, Langon returned the favor as he too went off course. Woolf retook the lead, with Jamie Wilson holding second over Langon. In the end, Woolf took the victory over Langon with Wilson retiring on lap 17, giving Chris Ouimet the third step of the podium.

Jarred Campbell marked his PKC North 2011 debut with a victory in the Bordogna Racing-sponsored TaG Junior division. Campbell was quickest in qualifying (51.031) of the 12 drivers, clearing the field by six-tenths. The start of heat one did not go his way as he spun in the opening lap to record a DNF. Reigning SKUSA Pro Tour champion Luis Tyrrell went on to take the win over “Nitro Nick” Sommers. At the start of heat two, Sommers got the jump on Tyrrell to go wire-to-wire for the win – with Tyrrell finishing second over point leader Blaine Rocha. Sommers held on to the top spot through the opening laps of the feature, but quickly became under fire by Campbell. Starting eighth, Campbell was into the top-three by lap two and began running down Sommers. The two put on a great show for the remainder of the 20-lap main event, with Campbell escaping to a one-second victory over Sommers. Jack Freese completed the podium over Tyrrell and round one winner Austin Dement to mix up the championship chase heading into round three.

Reigning SKUSA Pro Tour champion Ethan Wilson returned to his winning ways at Prairie City, sweeping the day in the Cambrian Go-Karts-sponsored TaG Master division. Wilson posted a 51.349-lap in qualifying to earn the pole position. From there, Wilson went on to lead all 12 laps of heat one and heat two, in addition to the green-to-checkered victory in the main event. Round one winner Glenn McKinnon finished second with PKC newcomer Corey Mitchell placing third.

The Cambrian Go-Karts-sponsored TaG Cadet class was hotly contested from the opening practice to the final lap of the feature. Scott Huffaker was the quickest in qualifying (54.348), with Hunter Kelly and Hunter Corbitt within six-hundredths of his time. The start to heat one shuffled up the field, with Huffaker and round one sweeper Davey Manthei Jr. able to break away. Huffaker led until the final lap when Manthei took the spot and the win. Manthei went flag-to-flag in heat two all alone after Huffaker was shuffled back early on, leaving Kelly in the second spot. Kelly grabbed the lead as the green flag waved to start the feature, while Manthei dropped down the order after some early race shuffling. Kelly would go unchallenged to score his first series victory, with Danny Rubino and Corbitt completing the podium. Huffaker and Manthei would finish fifth and sixth, respectively, behind Cole Davis.

Chris Yettito completed an event sweep in the S3 Novice Stock Moto category, outrunning round one winner Ryan Rasberry, which is setting up to be a season long battle for the series championship. Jim Kidd took home his first victory in the Fastech Racing-sponsored S4 Master Stock Moto division. Nick Galante was quickest in qualifying and the opening heat, but Kidd took home the win in heat two. Galante led the first half of the feature, before Kidd took over the spot and was able to hold him off to the checkered.

The SKUSA ProKart Challenge North program will take the month of April off to allow racers a full month to prepare for the upcoming SKUSA Pro Tour SpringNationals at Musselman Honda Circuit (formerly P1 Kart Circuit) in Tucson, AZ on April 29-May 1. The series will return on May 27-28 for round three – traveling for the first time in its history outside the state of California – to the Desert Park Raceway in Reno, Nevada. The SKUSA crew will be back trackside prior to the SKUSA Pro Tour 2011 opener for round three of the PKC South program on April 8-9 at the Buttonwillow Raceway Park kart track in Buttonwillow. This will be a good time to get in one last SKUSA race prior to the Pro Tour SpringNationals.

ANTHONY GANGI JR. PODIUMS IN RETURN TRIP TO SUPERNATS

G7 Motorsport backs up strong 2010 performance with a podium finish in TaG Cadet to close out the 2011 season in style
Brookville, NY - The G7 Motorsport Team, along with team driver Anthony Gangi Jr., proved that their strong run at the 2010 SuperNats was no fluke. This past weekend the SuperKarts! USA SuperNationals XV hit the temporary karting circuit at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino parking lot with a full field of 81 Vortex Mini Rok drivers in the TaG Cadet class. Anthony Jr.'s A Main pole position from one year ago was followed up this year with a third place finish in a red flag shortened Feature Race. This SuperSunday was another hard fought battle with Gangi Jr. starting from inside row four and looking to hit the podium before the checkered flag flew. Making up ground early, Gangi Jr. held onto his third place spot in the two-lap shootout to earn a trip to the podium. The Mike Doty Racing prepared Hasse cadet kart was solid all weekend as Gangi Jr. strung together a series of solid heat races and an excellent A Main Feature race. Making the A Main feature was a feat in itself with just 40 karts making the SuperSunday Feature and the rest heading home after the LCQ.
"We are really happy to be on the podium. Last year was a heartbreaker being on pole for the main and then getting spun out early," comments Anthony Gangi Sr. "Anthony Jr. did an excellent job running three solid heat races to keep himself in contention. He and Chris (Perez) did a nice job getting the kart ready to rock for the final. Mike Rameraz did a really nice job on the engines. We had excellent power all weekend. This was a great way to cap off the 2011 season."
A disappointing qualifying effort had Gangi Jr. sitting 16th quickest after the two groups were combined. That result would give him a starting spot on row eight for all three heat races. Heat one was a solid run with Gangi Jr. taking fifth at the line to start off the critical heat races with a nice finish. Heat two saw Gangi Jr. tied up in traffic with seventh the best he could muster at the line. The third heat was another good run with Anthony Jr. running patient and taking another top five finish with fifth place at the stripe. The combination of heat race finishes earned him a seventh place start for the A Main.
With a full field on a temporary track everyone knew that A Main race would be good. After two attempts to start the race the field went green on the third try with the front staying clean in the opening corners. Gangi Jr. slipped into the sixth spot and looked to gain more as the race moved on. Getting up to fifth on lap six the track was red flagged for an injured driver. After a 40-minute delay the TaG Cadet class was issued a green/white/checkered two-lap shootout. Gangi quickly went to work staying clear of problems and diving into the third spot that he held for the final lap. At the line it was Gangi Jr. making a nice run up five spots in the shortened Feature to take third place and a trip to the podium.
"It was a great week of racing. I really tried hard to stay out of trouble and score some good finishes," comments Gangi Jr. "I really wanted to do better than last year. The final was crazy especially with the two-lap shootout. Getting third place was great. I can't thank my tuner Chris enough for all of his hard work. I also want to thank Mike Doty for all his hard work and excellent driver coaching.
The G7 Motorsport Team is proudly supported by: Millwork Solutions Inc., Precision Karting Technologies and Hole Shot Drive Systems.
