Jan Charouz - 24th: "It was fantastic, just to be on the track with people like Schumacher, Vettel and Alonso is incredible. It's a bit different to testing because there are a lot more cars on track so you have to make space for others to not cause traffic. I think I did quite a good job as I was pretty close to Daniel which was the main goal, I don't think five tenths are too much.

NASCAR: MWR announces Martin car 2012 number

MARTIN AND WALTRIP CAR NUMBER SWITCHES FROM 00 TO 55
Number Commemorates Aaron’s Founding in 1955

CORNELIUS, N.C. – Michael Waltrip Racing announced today that Mark Martin and Michael Waltrip’s Toyota Camrys will carry the number 55 during the 2012 and 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series seasons.

The number commemorates Charlie Loudermilk’s founding of Aaron’s, Inc. in 1955.

Aaron’s, Inc., the nation's leader in the sales and lease ownership of residential furniture, consumer electronics, home appliances and accessories, grew from 400 to more than 1,900 stores since its initial race sponsorship of MWR in 2000.

“This is a new era for the Aaron’s Dream Machine,” said Aaron’s Chief Operating Officer Ken Butler. “Our new driver lineup with Mark and Michael created a good opportunity for us to make more changes, including the car number. Every one of our employees knows the significance of the number 55 in our company, and I know they will have pride watching that number compete on Sundays while flying our colors.”

Martin will drive in 25 Sprint Cup events each of the next two seasons, sharing the No. 55 Aaron’s Dream Machine with Waltrip who will drive seven events with Aaron’s sponsorship. Martin will join Clint Bowyer and Martin Truex Jr. in the MWR stable of drivers.

Martin will begin his tenure with MWR at the 2012 Daytona 500. Waltrip will run the remaining restrictor plate races plus the race in his home state of Kentucky. MWR plans to run a combination of drivers and sponsor partners to fill the remaining races when Martin and Waltrip are not behind the wheel.

“I love it, a new team, a new car and a new number,” said Martin. “The car number means a lot to the driver. We talked about a lot of different number options, but the number 55 means a lot to Aaron’s and to Michael, so I am proud to drive it.”

Waltrip raced the No. 55 at Bill Davis Racing in 2006 and 2007-2009, the first three years of MWR’s existence.

“This means a lot to me,” said Waltrip. “I know how far MWR has come since we started with the No. 55 NAPA Toyota and how much we’ve grown heading into 2012. To get back into the No. 55 Toyota in 2012 and share driving duties with a first ballot hall of famer in Mark Martin is certainly an honor.”

NASCAR: SHR celebrates Tony Stewart's third championship

Stewart Wins Wild Sprint Cup Race at Homestead To Score Third Career Title

In a race that will go down as one of the best in NASCAR’s long and storied history, Tony Stewart won Sunday’s Ford 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event at Homestead-Miami Speedway and clinched his third Sprint Cup championship.

Stewart, who led four times for 65 laps in the No. 14 Office Depot/Mobil 1 Chevrolet Impala for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR), defeated Carl Edwards by 1.306 seconds to score his fifth win of the season and his third in 13 career Sprint Cup starts at Homestead.

I’ve got to believe that this is definitely one of the greatest races of my life.

Tony Stewart

He and Edwards both ended the season with 2,403 points, but Stewart’s five wins in 2011 compared to Edwards’ one win gave Stewart the tiebreaker advantage.

Stewart won Sprint Cup titles in 2002 and 2005 and, with this year’s crown, became the first driver-owner to win a Sprint Cup championship since Alan Kulwicki in 1992. In addition, Stewart is the ninth driver to win three or more championships as he joins Richard Petty (seven), Dale Earnhardt (seven), Jimmie Johnson (five), Jeff Gordon (four), David Pearson (three), Darrell Waltrip (three) Cale Yarborough (three) and Lee Petty (three).

En route to winning, Stewart passed an incredible 118 cars throughout the 267-lap race.

“Our Office Depot/Mobil 1 Chevy was awesome and I can’t thank Darian Grubb (crew chief) and everyone at Stewart-Haas Racing for all their hard work and all of our partners and sponsors for supporting us,” Stewart said. “I feel like I passed half the State of Florida. I mean, 118 cars is a lot of cars to pass in one race. I don’t care what series you’re in or where you’re at. To do it under the circumstances and the pressure that we had today, I’m very, very proud of that. And, man, I’ve been racing 31 years and I can’t even remember some of the races I’ve won. But I would have to say that, under the circumstances, I’ve got to believe that this is definitely one of the greatest races of my life.”

Stewart started 14th and near disaster struck the Office Depot/Mobil 1 team less than 15 laps into the race as an unidentified piece of debris punched a sizeable hole in the grill of the No. 14 machine. With the race under caution for light rain shortly thereafter, Stewart spent a couple of long pit stops that allowed his crew to repair the damage as best it could in order to return the Office Depot/Mobil 1 car to the track in the top possible form.

The repairs worked as Stewart, who restarted 40th on lap 22, moved all the way to 25th over the next eight laps. Meanwhile, Edwards, who had started on the pole, led 24 of the first 30 laps.

By lap 68, Stewart was up to 12th and, by lap 108, he had cracked the top-five in an amazing comeback from his early misfortune while Edwards continued to lead.

Suddenly, the Florida skies opened up on lap 109 and rain began falling, which forced NASCAR officials to red-flag the race for 1 hour, 14 minutes and 6 seconds. At the time of the red flag, Edwards was at the point and had led four times for 87 laps while Stewart was fifth and had yet to lead a lap.

After the engines refired once the red flag was lifted, Stewart, Edwards and the rest of the field headed to pit road under caution for routine pits stops and, for the lap-116 restart, Edwards was third while Stewart was right beside him in fourth. Stewart blew past Edwards on the restart and, on lap 123, passed four-time Sprint Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon and took the lead for the first time. He held the top spot for 13 laps before pitting under caution for four tires and fuel on lap 136.

Unfortunately, during the stop, the crew had a bit of an issue changing the right-front tire and Stewart was forced to restart ninth while Edwards restarted fourth. The green-flag stint lasted only five laps before another caution came out for a spin by Jimmie Johnson and the field lined up for yet another restart with Edwards now third and Stewart ninth.

In an incredible four-wide move on lap 148, Stewart blasted past Edwards and several other cars and suddenly found himself in third place while Edwards fell to fifth. Just four laps later, Stewart was back in front and stayed there for five laps before pitting under caution on lap 156.

Once again, however, issues in the pits hurt Stewart as a lugnut jammed in the rear-tire changer’s air gun as he attempted to change the right-rear tire. The delay was enough that crew chief Darian Grubb cut short what was going to be a four-tire stop and sent Stewart back on track with just two new right-side tires.

Stewart lined up for the lap-161 restart in 12th place while Edwards lined up in the fifth position. In just one lap, Stewart was up to seventh and, by lap 167, he was fourth with Edwards right ahead of him in third.

On lap 175, Edwards took the lead and, on lap 180, Stewart moved into second place right behind him to set up a fantastic championship battle with less than 100 laps remaining in the season.

Edwards, who by now had clinched the valuable bonus point for leading most laps in the race, headed to pit road on lap 201 for four tires and fuel.

Stewart inherited the lead from Edwards and stayed out in front until lap 211, conserving fuel in hopes that if he stopped late enough, he would not have to pit again before the race ended.

Finally, on lap 212, Stewart headed to pit road for four tires and a full load of fuel while Edwards rocketed around him and took the lead.

Just one lap later, the Florida skies opened up once again and a light rain began falling, bringing out a caution while NASCAR officials attempted to dry the track. Grubb and Stewart’s call to stretch their fuel mileage worked to perfection as NASCAR kept the cars circling under caution for 17 laps in order to help the track-drying process, which also greatly assisting Stewart as he attempted to save gas.

It gave me the opportunity to do what I love doing best, letting it all hang out and putting it all on the line with the restart.

Tony Stewart

Meanwhile, on lap 214, Edwards headed to pit road for his final stop of the day, when he took two tires and fuel.

For the final restart of the day on lap 231, Stewart lined up third while Edwards was fifth and the two cars in front of Stewart still needed to pit.

Little did it matter as Stewart passed Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski just after the restart to take the lead on lap 232 and never looked back, leading the final 36 laps en route to victory.

“You know, I didn’t question what the plan was or why the plan was,” Stewart said. “I just stuck to what he (Grubb) told me and, the lap that he called us in, he called us in going into turn one and, when I came off turn two, the fuel pressure dropped, the motor laid down a little bit but was still running. When I got to turn three, I shut it off, coasted around to turn four, kicked the switch, kicked the clutch, drove down pit road. We did the stop and he’s, like, ‘Keep it revving, keep it running;’ and I’m staring at a fuel-pressure gauge that’s not building. It’s sitting at two pounds. And we dropped the jack. ‘Leave.’ I get 50 feet from the last timeline and it dies. I mean, it’s dead. It’s out. And I’m, like, we just lost this thing, and we roll about a hundred feet and it takes off and the needle goes up and we are fourth at that point, and Carl has to come back in, and it’s like, ‘Wow, that is the call of the race, the call of the Chase, and it gave me the opportunity to do what I love doing best, letting it all hang out and putting it all on the line with the restart.’

“And that was the one probably hairy moment of anything that I did all day where I felt like, ‘Oh, maybe I just lost this,’ and got loose underneath the 18 (Busch) and the 2 (Keselowski), and it was a three-wide drag race down into three, and the way this thing drove all day, it had really good side bite. I knew I could bury it down in the corner. I just didn’t know if I was going to make the front end stick out the back, and we drive back out with the lead. And, at that point, you just sit there and go, ‘All you can ask for is where we are at right now and, whatever happens, it happens.’”

Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 39 U.S. Army Chevrolet Impala for SHR, finished 12th and ends the 2011 campaign 10th in points. Newman and Denny Hamlin each finished the season with 2,284 points and one victory, but Hamlin finished second once while Newman did not have a runner-up result. Thus, Hamlin was awarded ninth in the standings while Newman was slotted 10th.

Martin Truex Jr., finished third in the Ford 400 while Matt Kenseth and Gordon rounded out the top-five. Clint Bowyer, Kasey Kahne, Kevin Harvick, Hamlin and Jeff Burton comprised the remainder of the top-10.

There were eight caution periods for 54 laps, with nine drivers failing to finish the 267-lap race.

With the racing season over, Stewart and his Sprint Cup brethren head to Las Vegas for the annual awards banquet Dec. 2. Once there, Stewart – the new series champion and first since Jimmie Johnson’s unprecedented five-year reign – will be honored, along with the rest of the drivers who competed in the 2011 Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Rossi suffered a mediocre start dropping down into 5th position, and gradually down to 7th through a few corners more. Blasting from the docks was Nicky Hayden, who held an advantage in fourth place though would have to catch the Ducati Duo of Bayliss and Capirossi, who held the One-Two positions in any attempt at reeling in the world title.

Unforeseen was Championship Leader Rossi's huge error on lap five whilst leant over mid corner. The young Italian lost the front end of his Camel Yamaha, sending his 2006 title hopes into the gravel and out of contention. Despite the off a desperate Rossi remounted in hope of retaining some points, it was not yet over by Rossi's standards. Uncharacteristically the Italian had seemed edgy throughout morning warm-up, having only posted an eleventh quickest time in the untimed practice. Turned on its Heels, the advantage now lay with Hayden how rode amazingly, even under the serious pressure of having the world title within immediate reach.

Almost overlooking the battle for honours at front having witnessed the title drama unfold, Troy Bayliss had extended his lead to an incredible two-seconds over part-time team mate Loris Cappirossi. In search of his first ever Moto GP victory, Bayliss a man on a mission, held his own to the line and braced a superb win. Capirossi followed home in second place making it a one two for Marlboro Ducati, whilst we all waited in awe for that #69 Honda of Nicky Hayden to blast out onto home straight. A glimpse in the distance of the orange and blue Repsol livery through the final curve ensured it was finally here, the dawn of a new World Moto GP champion! Bracing the chequered flag, Kentucky Kid Hayden raised his arms in disbelief, having earlier almost accepted Rossi's title retaining yet again. Followed by an emphatic display of emotion, Hayden pursued to smoke the back tyre, wheelie and celebrate in true championship winning style!

In 1999, Hayden won his first Grand National Championship race (Hagerstown Half Mile) and took Rookie of the Year honors. He was also declared the AMA's athlete of the Year. In 2000, Nicky Hayden won the Springfield Short Track. In 2002, despite racing in just a handful of dirt-track events, Hayden was able to win four races: Springfield Short Track (twice), Springfield TT Steeplechase, and Peoria TT Steeplechase. Hayden only lacks a win at a mile track to join Dick Mann, Kenny Roberts Sr., Bubba Shobert, and Doug Chandler in the prestigious "Grand Slam Club."

For 2006, Hayden was charged with spearheading Repsol Honda's championship aspirations, and was the only rider to be handed the full 2006 Honda bike during pre-season testing. He led the championship from the third race and looked set to break Valentino Rossi's championship-winning streak. Capturing the championship was not without peril: in the second to last round at Estoril in Portugal, teammate Dani Pedrosa lost the front-end while trying to pass Hayden. The resulting lowside accident took out both bikes. This left Hayden eight points behind Rossi in the championship with one race left to go. In the last race of the season on October 29, 2006 Rossi crashed on lap 5 trying to make up for a poor start. Hayden won the 2006 title that day by finishing 3rd (9.3s) behind race winner Troy Bayliss and Loris Capirossi.

Hayden finished the 2009 MotoGP championship in 13th place (out of 18), his worst result in 7 years of racing MotoGP. His championship campaign was marked by remarkable misfortune, being speared off the track on three different occasions, resulting in no point scoring races. Yuki Takahashi, Alex De Angelis and Jorge Lorenzo crashed into him at Motegi, Misano and Phillip Island respectively.

Early in the 2010 season, Hayden noted that there is pressure from the American audience for one of the three frontrunning American riders (himself and the Tech 3 Yamaha duo of Colin Edwards and Ben Spies) to win a race.

Official: McLaren dubs next model MP4-27 at Production Centre opening [w/videos]

Turning a Formula One team into an automaker is no mean feat. Ferrari did it decades ago, and now McLaren is following suit. The first product of the newly formed McLaren Automotive - an offshoot of the F1 team - has already hit the market in the form of the MP4-12C, with several additional models planned over the coming years. But in order to do so, they'll need a state-of-the-art production facility.

Fortunately, that's just what McLaren has built at its cutting-edge factory in Woking, England. The new McLaren Production Centre has just opened its doors, inviting British Prime Minister David Cameron to swing by for a tour.

In announcing the visit, McLaren has also revealed the name of its next project as the MP4-27. It isn't immediately clear if the MP4-27C will be the successor to the legendary McLaren F1 road car, or if it will simply be the company's next race car.

Either way, that's not all that McLaren is working on these days, beyond fielding its own front-running, World Championship F1 team, it's supplying the electronics for the next generation of F1 engines as well as those for IndyCar, NASCAR, airplane engines and the BMW-redesigned BART subway system in San Francisco. In other words, there's not a lot of sitting still going on in Woking, and that's just the way they seem to like it.

Follow the jump for the full press release and a pair of videos from the facility's opening, and scope out the high-res images in the gallery for a look behind the curtain.

To Sleep, Perchance to Dream . . . and Go Faster

Looking for those extra tenths? Try sleeping on it. At its fundamental basics, racing is about being the fastest driver on the track on a given day. It sounds simple, but when you extrapolate that to the thousands of competitors on iRacing, it soon becomes apparent the battle isn’t just with fellow competitors, but with the track that rolls out ahead. Because to be at the top in virtual or real motorsport, means being the one to hustle their car around x miles of circuit the fastest. Whether it’s practice, qualifying or racing, time is one of the governing indicators of who will rise to the top of the pile. In the search for those few extra tenths of a second, sim-racers have been known to spend a small fortune [...]
